We have a new grain store and looking at different cooling systems. Is anyone using this system or have experience of it?

We looked at it but it was adding to the floor price to have underground ducts. Went with the standard pedestals in the end, which work perfectly well. It also means the floor is unencumbered should we want to use the shed for something else.

We have them in our big grain store, they're easy to work with, it's nice being able to move the fans without climbing up onto the grain, once you remove the pedestals and put the cover on the floor can be used for anything. There is the additional cost of the underground pipes though.

Its only a few lengths of standard soil pipe isnt it?

Basically. However there is a bit of a faff factor which when you are talking with concrete contractors = more cost. It was not a massive difference but with an ever escalating build cost we had the saving. If we were doing something on a larger scale then we would probably have done it.

Looked at it seriously this year for a new shed but went with normal pedestals as its best suited to deep grain (ours is only 4m) It was going to add a significant cost, the 200mm soil pipe is multiple times more than the standard 110mm, plus the hassle of working around the pipe and outlets when hardcoring and concreting the shed.
I just bought more of the automatic evolution fans so I don't have to move them very often. Having the hot air exhausting outside would be better than inside the shed but can always add an extractor fan, the grain is down at 3 or 4c now anyway.

the big advantage of the floor vent system over pedistals is that the air is exhausted out the shed which could save electricity
i have sheds in sheltered locations that pedistals do not work very well
so duct the outlet to the out side

It's a very good system. Best for very high heaps where you would never be able to keep a floor standing pedestal straight. Apart from complicating the floor laying, the only downside was when pikies stole the fan units!

Here's one of mine. Unperforated twin wall fixed to the back wall of the shed with a 90 at the bottom onto a perforated pipe that runs to teh front of the shed with a bung in the end. Standard pedestal fan on the top blowing outside. Its been way more effective than just using pedestals as we have for 20+ yrs
