Massey 5445 Engine problems

My 2008, Massey Fergusson 5445 i making me mad :)

It all started when it gradually lost power when I was out harrowing with it.

Now it runs OK for a few minutes, and gradually looses power and it's ability to rev, as it heats up.
Leaving it to idle, and eventually it dies after roughly 10 minutes.

The strange thing is that if I do a quick stop/start - and it rev's OK once again, before gradually dying as before.

So, my first guess was a faulty priming pump - replaced the pump and filters without any success.

- Measured fuel pressure into the mechanical high pressure pump - steady at 9psi.
- Checked pipes/hoses - everything seems fine.
- Checked coolant for foam/oil - nothing indicating a blown head gasket.
- Turbo sounds fine

It puffs grey smoke when revving (when cold) but noting really worth noticing - see video.

Is is the Perkins engine with the mechanical fuel pump, last generation 2008 model.
I suspect that it may be fuel related - however i cannot see how a mechanical fuel pump will reset instantly after a quick stop/start.

Anybody have any tips/tricks I'll be forever grateful.

Most probably your pump unfortunately is dying BUT if you have a mechanical throttle cable you will have a stop solenoid therfore it would be worth checking the live and earth connection to the stop solenoid with a halogen 55w bulb just incase it's not getting a steady 12V. I would be inclined to remove the plunger from stop solenoid or swap the solenoid just in case aswell. I think the ignition barrels can play up on some Masseys aswell, this may not be giving a constant power to the solenoid but it is clutching at straws really.

Changed the filter - haven’t seen any gauze, but I ran the lift pump with the fuel pump hose disconnected - it seems to have a steady flow of diesel going into the high pressure pump.

Part 6 on the inlet is small filter .

i only speak from experience on a 4355

Thanks - I disconnected and checked voltage, but not while it was running. Will check the solenoid.

Right - the 5400 has an electric lift pump and looks a bit different - but I’ll check just in case
sorry forgot they were on electric .

Did you check with multimeter? Multimeter won't load the circuit to highlight any issues. Usa a halogen bulb like a h3 or h1 or h7. It will load the circuit. Earth it aswell to the wire on the pump as it could have an earth issue. You could also try a bit of ATF oil or two stroke straight into fuel filter to run through pump aswell but it's usually short term fix

Yes, it has the electric lift pump with the screwed filter at the bottom - I was so certain it was this pump that I replaced it before even checking how it performed.
The tractor has done only 2000hrs - the fuel pump was adjusted for a bit more oomph 400 hours ago.

Some electric fuel pump had a gauze filter u can see inside the head when the bottom filter is off. Also I would be checking the earth on the fire wall by removing the earth leads off it then unscrewing the stud out of the fire wall and taping the silicon out of the hole for a better contact.

Similar behaviour when the ignition switch is not returning past the cold start position due to a weak spring.
The flooding eventually stalls the engine. Might be worth a check.

Not sure I understand what you are referring to. The system has an electronic priming pump and a mechanical high pressure pump. The electrical connection to the priming pump is on/off and so is the solinoid to the mechanical pump.
I thought the priming pump was suppose to be running continually when the engine is running? Is it suppose to shut off after a while?

does it not have a cold start heater plug in the intake manifold?

If it is a tier 2 engine with the electric pump/filter assembly mounted at the rear of engine on the lh side just change it. They often fail. I never change a filter in them until i have turned the ignition on and can hear a good strong buzzing coming from the pump.

Quick update;
Checked wiring to shut-off solenoid
Checked feed/priming pump, pushes 9psi steady
Disconnected all hoses, made temporary transparent hose between priming pump and high pressure pump to check for air - nothing noticeable
- So high pressure pump coming out ? - a local diesel Guy will run it in the test-jig, bet it’s out of tune
