Evening chaps,

We’re currently looking at trading our Massey 390 for a Massey 6170. Is there any common problems with them?

we’ve Spoke to a couple people and we have contradicting stories one person recons the electrics are terrinle
But another person recons they’re bomb proof? Anyone else through in some other options? Cheers.

Check to see if the clutch is jumpy when warm.

The electrics can give some trouble but normally is corroded wires in around the brain.

Slide the coupler back on the 4wd shaft to check the splines on the front axle

Had a 6180 for years - we all hated it ! Rough ride , crap hydraulics , jumpy clutch and if not over full of back end oil the steering seizes up going downhill are just a few problems. For knocking around we kept the Fiat 130 - there are plenty of better makes out there. We also have a MX170 which just keeps going - a good MX135 etc would be better.

When I was looking for a tractor did some research, there was a lot of problems with the early models which would have been on M and N plates, after they sorted most of the issues. Profi did an issue on them and ones after a certain serial number where better, the ones i looked at were on a P plate onwards.
In the end bought a 62 series and been little trouble to date but is over 20 years old now. Power shuttle is a big plus on the 62 but other than that, cosmetics and cab layout not a massive difference between late 61 series and early 62 series that i could find.

our 6180 was 96 and as said the later one were ok, yes replaced a few looms, i had fire and that replaced the main loom and after that any wiring issue was either bypass the brain, or a new loom, all could be done by me they arent a really technical tractor other than the main loom. did the front axle diff bearings too, few other minor niggles but nothing that really lead to it being changed. it came to us needing synco on 1st gear and left with it, we fitted a new hyd pump, it came with a new one fitted so it had done a fair bit when we had to replace it. we sold it as we had to change something to a tractor dad couldn drive with bad hips, im not changing the valmet or 399, hes not changing his 390 so 6180 had to go in place of a mxm140pro. the mxm isnt as manouravable, i do think the 61 series are actually quite a handy tractor compared to some, perhaps its just i spent too long driving them.

Thanks for all the replies. The clutch when driven felt fine the dealer where buying it from has been using it himself on hedge trimming and hasn’t any problems with it. It’s a s reg so should he a later model with issues sorted. We where told about the front axle wearing due to lack of greese where going to see it again and check that.

This 70 came from near Boston Lincolnshire it has solid centre rear wheels, puh, 4 speed pto and columb shuttle.
We had a 6170 that was S reg and we liked it only dislike way the exaust mounts onto the cab were rattly and snapped. Ours was closed centre hydraulics with push out hitch but we only had it 3 years then changed for 6290. Personally I preferred it to 6290 it’s just a pity they hadn’t got the power control lever as the Elec shuttle was a bit annoying

Walk away, 6170's are a load of sh!t. I had one and in the end MF UK bought it back from me, never any brakes, clutch, air in both even after bleeding. Common problem. Massey kept it quiet at the time.Try and get a 6270, or even better a 6280. A lot better tractors. I often think what happened to the tractor, it was used at banner lane as a factory run around, till the brakes failed. Reg was P199 AEP.

I bought a 6170 about 12 months ago for straw chopper and a run about to take a few hours off my two mainline tractors. I really like it. Converted it to manual shuttle it did have the early pre select, a bit of spit and polish and it’s a nice machine to use! Handbrake on wrong side is annoying! Mine has exhaust in the middle of bonnet. It’s pretty flat! Almost feels a bit John Deere!! I was thinking of fitting a turbo but I doubt it’ll happen!! Try and look for a 80 or 90 as they go well! 61 have a bad name I don’t really know why the only really issue if you read most threads is electrics, and tbh most tractors of that age all have the same! However if you can use a multimeter they are very basic to get your head around!

personally i think all the bad ones are dead or exported the ones that are left have lived at least 22 years so cant be that bad check roof for holes front pinion shaft for wear and if everything else works it will be ok . you are in the 10 k or less bracket so you are going to have to repair it. but any tractor of that age is the same
