In the South West we are very lucky...Mole Valley but the best by far are Barkers Animal Health...always at the main markets and keen for a deal and they don't chase the money..great crowd

I have just changed vets reluctantly but after constant badgering to reduce vaccine/antibiotic prices with little result couldn’t carry on. It will save me £300/month on vaccines alone! Call outs also cheaper and post movement tb testing on a per head basis.

It's a real problem isn't it? I know for a fact further north than me a vet practice charges £25ish for a call out and I'm £58 (plus VAT) and their equivalent alamycin is £8 plus vat and I'm paying £21 plus vat. When I showed them what I was paying for time, call outs and meds they thought it was scandalous.

Felt they were losing touch with large animal practical knowledge and had a couple off blunders which shouldn't have happened.

It will soon be a case of who you can get to do large animal work rather than picking & choosing which vet to go with.

Small animals on pet plans is where the money is.
Easier life than dealing with moaning farmers and no middle of the night call outs either.
Probably explains why most don't seem bothered about being competitive on the increasingly small meds & vaccines side of their business.

Sorry to say but I totally agree with all that you write. Doesn't mean to say I like it though.

Round here there has been a bit of a resurgence in large animal practices, 2 or 3 very competitive and forward thinking outfits. I suppose like them the clients are getting fewer but bigger and have more buying power
