MF 188 Transmission Filters

Hello, we have an MF 188 that was sitting for two months. The 3pl isn't lifting and prior to this was lifting a sizeable transplanter.

It has a filter under the left side of the hood near radiator which I understand to be for the multipower.

I went underneath and it doesn't have the triangle three bolt cover holding the strainer in the belly like our 168 and 399 etc. It has nothing underneath.

Does it have another location for this strainer, or completely different filter assembly.

I am in Australia so an export from UK model from new.

Thanks in advance.

You obviously know your Massey Ferguson tractors of the era. I always thought that a 185/188 had the suction strainer accessible from underneath, I thought it happened at the same time as 'pressure control' hydraulics and the straight front axle in the 135 around 1972.
Does your tractor have pressure control hydraulics??
Anyway, prior to all that, one used to drop some oil out into a clean bucket, take off one or both of the 'response' or 'PTO' side covers to access the filter?
Someone far more knowledgeable than me will be along with something more useful, I hope.

I believe it has pressure control hydraulics which is the section of the quadrant in front of position and you slide the position lever forward to use it. All our 100 series have it even the ones prior to 72 build.

The serial no. indicates a 72 build on this 188, and I have heard the filter may be inside the pto control lever housing., but not sure. Has independant pto only.

So will I need to pull pto lever housing to access the filter?

It's been a very long time since I did anything with one of those I'm afraid. Most of those we had around were mechanical PTO.
I'd start with the oil out and response control off. Have a look inside. There may be pipes involved in the removal of the pto lever??
You'll need some snips as the top filter cover is wired to prevent it vibrating loose..

mkIII hydraulics is underneath, mkII is through the PTO cover

Multipower not working, but ipto engages fine.
OK. Years ago I was an operator of a new188 that regularly used to loose hydraulics and multipower. This was due to a hydraulic pipe that used to become detached inside the tractor [Needed to take the top cover off]. BUT it also affected IPTO which would not engage. But worth a look inside.
Tractor was a complete heap of junk!
