Went to take my ladys muck trailer up to farm today and twice it cut out on me . She has an old griffiths grain trailer and has been packing it solid with straw last 2 weeks , with that in mind and the constant rain would it be true to say that the trailer was to heavy to pull down the lane up an incline ? I had to bleed fuel system twice and then get a mate to tow it to farm . If any one could advise me be gratefull and any info on towing weight be appreciated .

Would it not start again after it cut out?

Sounds like a fuel supply issue. Change the filter, clean the gauze on the lift pump (if so equipped) and make sure there's a free flow of fuel from the tank. There may be a small pencil type filter in the tank that could be the culprit- the sediment/ crap builds up around this and ends up stopping the fuel supply.

Nothing to do with how much is in the trailer ,more like fuel system needs some tlc ,we had 590s and they would lug an 8 tn spud cart about all day long
What they said (y)

I bled the fuel system each time it cut out . Drove the tractor back minus trailer free running fuel from tank . So will try new filters over weekend and hope that does the trick . Did notice 1 thing when bleeding system . I had to completley undo the 1st outlet union on fuel filter to prime pump fuel out
. Does that sound like an issue ?

Have a look at the filter (s) when you take them off- if they're black and full of gunk that will give you a clue. Pipe from tank to lift pump- disconnect at lift pump and fuel should pour out not trickle if that makes sense. Check the simple things first, somewhere in the system lies the fault I suspect. These old tractors are pretty bomb proof in this respect. Good luck.

defo change fuel filters anyway, anytime they have been left a bit tooo long on our 148 , you only find out when you put it under a bit of load, leads you into a false sense of secuity toddling about no problem on everyday duties going grand, then ya head off for 5 ton gravel from local quarry and it stops on the first hill home (or on first lap of field when mowing ), both times new filters and bled and no problems after

Thanks for ya help . A cpl of weeks ago it was minus 9 where we are and im sure the fuel lines froze ,if the diesel went waxy even though temp is warmer now would that block filters too ?

If you have still got a good flow from the tank and filters changed and its still stopping. There is a gauze filter in the fuel fitting that the fuel pipe screws into in the injector pump. The pipe going from the fuel filter to the circular part of the injector pump. Where it connects into the pump, fitting has a gauze. Just be careful taking it out, there is a valve in the bottom ...........
But if it keep running, dont worry about it.

Have you looked in the lift pump ,theres a gauze filter in there that gets cloged ,also gets full of sludge ,

It defo has a fuel problem
As above start checking from tank best if tank full then liftpump has less work to do and as above fuel will flow throo pipes
I Am shure at that age she will black smoke a little when pulling/revving the engine
So when going up a hill in the future see if it still black smokes if not its a fuel shortage
Dont get confused with blue smoke tho
Also if you dip the clutch it should rev straight back up
If it were a pulling weight problem you would just change down gears till in low box then spin out
Engine may stall if in two higher gear but never need bleeding etc it should always just start straight up
Fuel filter should be changed every year this new fuel i find is rubbish in old vehicles it hates been stood about
Ideally change fuel in tank but if you get tank as low as you dare and fill it up it should help
Unless that is possibly whats wrong fuel not coming out of tank
I have found gloves rags paper all sorts in fuel tanks blocking up the out let pipes
Best of look
Spent a lot of happy years on a 500 series MF
esp 590
Sent a lad/man to local feed mill 25 miles away many moons ago and he came back he was 24.5 ton gross said he couldn't go round corners it kept pushing tractor round
NO WONDER
I had put a turbo on tho lol
