I have a t2 6480 which is a pig to start on even a slightly cold morning.

Engine spins quite fast but it wont fire, eventually the battery runs out of juice.

Is there any kind of starting aid on these engines as i cant seem to find out?

Thanks

The heater on the t2 is stupid it only works are really low temps I’ve only ever seen light once, and it started better than normal! if you could alter this to force it to heat I bet it would be better

Ours was also a pig to start. There was not enough power getting to the thermostart (heater plug) so I ran a new wire from the ignition switch.

Quite often the problem comes back to the isolator switch by the steps. As the switch ages, contacts become dirty and corroded, leading to reduced voltage. Try by passing the switch by unbolting one wire off the back and bolting it onto the other wire. If this solves your issue, clean the switch up or buy a new one.

If it's spinning fast the battery and starter motor are ok. Does smoke come out of the exhaust after a few turns, indicating the fuel delivery is ok? if it's spinning fast and smoking ok i'd imagine something is wrong compression or timing wise (but I ain't no mechanic!). A little sniff of easystart might help.

Thanks for the replies. Gone 7000 hrs. Not sure if theyve ever been touched can find out.

I charged the tractor off another tractor for 15 min and after at least 10seconds of fast spinning it fired up.

Theres not a huge amount of smoke from the exhaust when cranking

Good to note the normal amount of smoke just before she fires for future reference, also how long she's been spinning before the smoke appears.

Jumper the heater plug direct from battery to test if it starts more readily.. I would suspect its the the inj pump though - VP44's are notorious.
just reminded me, smoke from the heater plug could mask the fact that it's not coming from the injection pump, so disconnecting the heater would eliminate that source of smoke.

This is what we did with our 5465

So after a bit of trial and error it seems the batteries may be a contributory factor. Using the ones off my other tractor will start the engine easier and its spinning harder.

I parked the tractor in the shed a few days ago and disconnected the battery as my isolator has been bypassed. Went to start yesterday and it wouldnt start and the batteries died after a few attempts. I think if it had been summer it would have fired.

Took batteries off the other tractor and it started no bother.

Is it normal for batteries to be knackered after 3 years?

They are agco ones

Thanks

take them both off and charge both up for at least 8/10 hours, then go to your local battery place and ask them to test the 2
