I’m sorry, but is there any actual statistical evidence that most milk price reductions hurt autumn calvers over and above Spring calvers ?!
even though seasonality deductions apply, to all, spr, aut or ayr, spr grazing carries the lowest costs, in terms of feed etc, other systems rely on buffer etc (not all), and carry the machinery to feed, all winter, as well. Many spr grazing herds outwinter, which is the cheapest system, so the COP per litre, in the spring, is much cheaper, conversely, when +ve seasonality kicks in, the spr herds are drying up, and should have very high solids, which again boosts the price, if nmr are to be believed, we have cows giving 7% bf and some over 8%, personally, i think nmr are wrong, but.
You have to sort through your systems, and do a 'what if', some will find, its cheaper to produce, others wont, but in a general point, I think uk dairy farmers, have been talked into creating some very complicated systems, which supply the wages of a lot of dairy supply industries !

that doesn’t answer my question in any way.
plus as someone who has outwintered and really enjoyed it. Show me some evidence of how it’s cheaper if there is the ability to house.
I couldn’t. Perhaps I wasn’t any good at it. Plus I always feared the “Sunday afternoon“ call and the fact the weather forecast mattered every day of the yr rather than 290 days. And I won’t even mention the pollution.
