Milk tainted dropped everyday for 2 weeks. Thoughts.

Must be more than 30 years ago remember someone had similar issues, turned out to be one cow had developed a taste for wild garlic tanker driver said there was a smell soon ever he lifted the tank lid. That went on for weeks before they found the problem.

This was exactly our situation. Some of the best silage we ever made but still caused a taint. It's usually dry but when you open it you get a strange (not unpleasant smell in the back of your nose). The taint in the milk was only obvious when fat % were high. When the milk was heated the taint got even worse. No test other than taste and smell could detect a problem.

Sounds exactly like ours, milk was frankly disgusting when warm, but hardly noticed when cold.

Surely the thing to do is 'borrow' 2 trailer loads of silage from a neighbour and feed that to see if the taint disappears.

We had this same problem back in the late 90's . Milk collection was refused because of the taint.
Round bale silage was our problem.
We were told that under certain conditions silage when made can actually have a very small alcohol content when fermented in round bales, and this is actually what causes the taint.
Interestingly we had a big problem with this for two years , until we stopped tedding grass before baling, and never had a problem since.

I remember years ago someone milking near the veg fields in Lancashire fed waste onion - before the days of too much checking before the tanker was tipped - took the silo down, and a hefty bill to culprit - hope insurance covered it!

Guessing omsco have had a few issues in last Week or 2 going by the email today. Wet Late summer/autumn might be causing issues with poorly fermented silage?
