Mobile cameras

Morning guys,
Last year whilst potato planting we had 2 of our new Holland tractors broken into and the intellivew screens stolen whilst parked in a customers farm yard.

I was just wondering if anyone had came across some kind of battery powered mobile camera I could hide each evening to use to capture any footage if it happened again this time. I’ve seen the nature cams but just after any recommendations other people are using or other ideas.
I know it wouldn’t make much difference but it would be nice to see if it would be someone you know doing them and catch the b******s

thanks

Before you spend any money, have a think about exactly what you want to happen with the cameras?

Do you want to turn up one morning, find the criminals have struck, and watch the whole thing on the cameras?

But what does that achieve? You've still had the tractors broken in to, the kit stolen with little chance of recovery. Your work for the day may have to stop as a result of the theft, and potentially pay out to borrow or replace to get the work going again.

What a buggerance.

Or, do you want to catch the thieves at it, and stop the theft?

Or better, still - not have the theft in the first place?

a) Is there something different that you could do, which could prevent the theft? For example, park the tractors somewhere else (back at the farm), or take out the kit being stolen at the end of the day? This may be a mess around, but actually stops the theft and doesn't cost you anything, other than a little bit of time.

b) what will you do if you catch the thieves 'at it"? Remember you need to keep safe, and keep legal - don't end up like Tony Martin.

c) what will be the affect on your farm operations and business costs if the theft occurs?

I'm just encouraging you to have a think first, before you dive in and spend cash you may not necessarily need to.

I actively encourage people to consider changing habits first, rather than spend cash.

You should only part with money if you really need to.

With regards to choosing cameras, it depends what your individual requirements and concerns are, and whether the system is being used properly or not. For example:

1) Connectivity - cable, Wi-Fi, 4g, 5g - SIM costs?
2) Detection range
3) Notifications/Alerts of suspicious activity - accuracy and method
4) Intruder tracking - direct the response and gather evidence
5) Image quality/range and date time stamp for evidential value
6) Night vision - IR or thermal?
7) Weatherproof - IP67 as a minimum.
8) Data storage and retrieval - on site hard drive or subscription based cloud drive?
9) Is the CCTV sited securely or can it be disabled or stolen?
10) and so on...

CCTV alone, that is not monitored and/or alert notifications acted upon, is not the answer.

Speaking of CCTV, this is an extract from my "Rural Security Handbook". Point one is the main and most important function of CCTV - and also the most overlooked and ignored. Even by CCTV sellers.

3.3.2.1. CCTV

With regards to CCTV, this is a very useful tool but is too often misunderstood or mis-sold and is not used appropriately or effectively. There is nothing worse than arriving at work, to find that you have been burgled and the ATV's, GPS' and other tools, equipment and vehicles have been stolen. While a member of your team has to ring round your clients, giving them the disappointing news that you can no longer deliver your products or services as promised, you sit and review the CCTV footage of the criminals getting away with your Assets. This is not an effective use of CCTV.

The functions of CCTV are:

i. Alert to the presence of suspicious activity
ii. Support the analysis of an alarm (is it correct or a false alarm?)
iii. Assist in the response of an incident (direct security staff or police to criminals’ location)
iv. Gather images to be used as evidence

If your CCTV is not informing you that something may be going wrong, at the exact time that it is possibly going wrong, then you’re CCTV is not reaching its maximum value.

Most people use CCTV for point four only, and this is not just wrong, but a waste of good money. If you're not using CCTV properly, you may as well hire a security guard, and buy him/her a nice comfy bed to sleep in.
