Momentary loss of power...

Hello everyone...

This harvest the engine on the combine has developed a fault...

The engine is a Ford 6 Cylinder (what is known as a 'D' Series engine?) 2715E N/A unit.

Starts as it should, all the power it should have, performs faultlessly other than...

Every now and again, when it's running flat out, it will die down noticably and suddenly, from 2200 to about 1700, for a few seconds, as if you were trying to seriously overload it, it then recovers.

Fuel filters I thought, so I changed them, as well as empty the bit of crud out of the bottom of the glass bowl, fuel filters were not visibly dirty, or noticably heavier, but the glass bowl had a bit of gunk in it...

It has made no difference... it will do it three times an hour, then nothing all afternoon.

For the first time today, she actually stopped, as if you had pulled the stopper. Checked the job over, diesel came flying out of the filter bleeder and the chamber on the top of the injection pump (inline). Cracked open the injectors, cranked until Diesel came though, away she went. Still died down briefly in work again though...

No visible leaks...

It feels like a weak injector or some crap in the filters... but not sure... did not investigate too much, wanted to get finished!! That's tomorrow's job...

Suggestions, anyone...

Is there a filter where the diesel leaves the tank? Often there are pencil type in line filters at the tank outlet which could physically stop any fuel leaving the tank.

It will be a blocked air filter, it will be trying to get enough to run on when it can, when it get really out of breath, it will suck the rubber air pipe in and choke it's self, thus really slowing the engine fast, maybe chucking black smoke out, once the vacuum drops in the rubber pipe it will pop back out and away the engine goes, now it's air filter is so bad, it just stopped it

How new are the fuel lines, sounds like air in the system which is only getting pulled through "at times".
They won't necessarily leak if it's just a tiny crack..? but may let air seep

I used to drive a Claas Senator which would die suddenly for no apparent reason, turned round one day as it was happening and it was the hessian sack over the air intake which was totally clogged, once the engine died it all dropped off and you were none the wiser.
 
If it's the old type d series with in line pump sounds like fuel rack is sticking change oil in pump then take cover off side where fuel rack is put a load of engine oil and duck oil in there and give it a go
