Mowing with front and rear mounted mowers

As above, leave it down. Your biggest problem will be the length. It’s a PITA to be honest. The first 2 times round you’ll be at the edge with the front while the rear hasn’t reached the edge.
You’ll also need about 10 rows on the headland for a comfortable turn on the middle.

other than this, you’ll wonder why you didn’t get a front years ago. It makes mowing a joy! :)

Yeah I couldn't really justify it in an economical sense either, I made it work by buying a banged up butterfly mower and stripping the beds to the bone. That wont work for everybody obviously but I am glad I did. As a bonus it is good fun for me having a triple while every other farmer has doubles though I am the smallest by a good margin :sneaky:.

Looking forwards to using them, definately feel one single mower just doesn't get the job done fast enough anymore.

Especially when to get the best silage they say everything should be mowed in the afternoon.... yet mowing is often as soon as the dew is lifted (or even before) till late at night job for a lot of people.

We kept hold of our old mower when we bought a new one, as it was pretty knackerd, but my father usually spends a few hours messing around with it and keeps feeding it oil and gets a bit more out of it to put a few acres down and it is much appreciated when I can finish mowing a few hours earlier than I was expecting and not be heading home in the dark :D It won't keep going though and I am thinking I would like front links and pto on my next tractor just so I have the option of a front mower.

How do front and rear mounted mowers work on soft ground? Will the tractor sink and rut much faster with all that weight compared to a trailed mower?

It should make less mess as the weight of the mowers when mowing is on the bed of the mower and you are only making one set of wheel marks for each pass rather than two. Also when carrying things rather than pulling a trailed implement, if you have to lift up, you would get increased traction. While you might make ruts there's going to be less mud brought up than if you are dragging a trailed mower which is also going to be running on the ground you want to run on with the next pass... so 3 wheels passing over every patch of ground between each row instead of two wheels between half the rows.

Thanks a lot Colin. I know its very long combination but we will see how it ll work in the field. The good thing is that i can leave it down. Its first time with front mower so i think i have to practice a little bit. Thanks

Obviously depends on machinery and labour availability but having another back mower would be more economical than needing fl and pto and front mower. Not relying on 1 tractor either. Just a thought, mounted doubles are nice though.
