I thought the ban only applied to manures with a high nitrogen content? That was the case for the closed period in this NVZ. It didn’t apply to FYM. So can we carry on with spreading low N manures such as FYM in the autumn?

No. The 'ban' (restriction) on Autumn applications, as it stands currently, actually relates to nitrogen use by the following crop. Not justified Autumn crop use of Nitrogen as supported in RB209 (fertiliser Recommendations) then no justification for the Autumn application of ANY manure, be it a manure with high N availability, such as poultry manure and slurries, or low N availability, such as straw based manures.

It’s hardly practical to apply manures to winter wheat in the spring is it with Wheelings and dollops in the growing crop? Are these folks at the EA for real? And what about ammonia loss and leeching out the heap over winter? Madness.
If you read the statement from the EA you will be informed of the decision tree you have to work through.

Who says autumn cereals won’t use the nutrients during the autumn? Cereals will use P and K to build roots and use some N for tillering. On poor sands here that N can actually make the difference between the crop surviving or not. We aren’t all on N index 2 deep silts.
Strikes me they are trying to obliterate our industry and obviously they are making it most for the livestock farmers because of their animal rights agenda, Princess Nut Nut influence.

If you can prove a need based on evidence nothing stopping you.

Lots of shouting and not very much understanding of crops needs it seems by some

Dear Dr W you are in need of a morning rant over your morning coffee! You know perfectly well 'Who says' Defra RB209 says. And of course the AHDB and NFU support the use of RB209. SO let's get this thread onto the proper war footing shall we. Anti AHDB. Anti NFU. Now do you dunk or dip your Rich Tea biscuit - is a telling trait, I find. Best wishes. Anyway, how come you are not on the Cyclone lifting?

Science? How naive are you? The process is pressure groups cause a fuss without any science at all. Govt agency issues directives because of a clueless wish to be seen to be stamping down on bad people cos their entire purpose is to keep coming up with ever new sh1t. Legitimate businesses become despondent because new rules are clearly idiotic. Huge sums of money are spent trying to find solutions to problems that don't even exist. New problems are created as a consequence. Same govt agency still doesn't realise it's all their doing and brings some more rules in that are even more stupid than the original stupid rule. At no stage does anyone ask the people who actually have some knowledge that has been passed down for generations. Rinse and repeat.
While this stupid rule is a sledgehammer to crack a nut there are farmers who have spread large amounts of slurry on waterlogged or sloping ground causing problems especially on maize stubbles, they are ones who need cracking down on.
As usual we will find ways round the stupid idiots at the EA

Autumn applied organic nitrogen doesn’t just disappear down through the profile though. Bacteria can use it to help breakdown cellulose into humus etc. It’s total nonsense to apply organic manures on a “crop immediate need” basis as we have known for about 500 years. I think they need to adjust their computer model. If they can’t grasp this and the practical problems they will cause with a ban, then really we have no hope. My neighbour is 60, has sold up and retired. There will be a lot more of that about before long if this madness persists.

Factory is going too slowly to keep up with my cyclone. Shed full going mouldy while no doubt they are busy with risk assessments and IT problems.😀

Isn't this exactly the problem with this stupid government, no one really seems to know what's law & what's "advisable", whether it's sh!t spreading, covid or many other things there is never sensible hard & fast rules that everyone must adhere to, it is always simply grey areas where no one is absolutely sure what is the right thing to do!

The obvious answer is for a govt to simply abolish them. They've passed the point of no return as far as I'm concerned. All semblance of rational thought has disappeared entirely. Govts are only too happy to abolish some govt depts and replace with new versions, why are they sleeping here?

You can't sack civil servants it seems. Only redeploy. This often cones with words like "efficiencies" and "comprehensive (aka paid for) IT review".

Whole civil service needs 25 percent cutting, and the other 75 percent to do a proper days work. And shut all their pension schemes.

That's their favourite way of maintaining control!
