My First Tractor

I bought a tidy 574 same as the 674 but fuel pump tweaked, good tractor the other month needs abit of paint and I’ve done the piston o rings in the back end but she’s been harrowing today, I gave 1250 for that. New tyres on her as well. But don’t expect a rolls Royce for that sort of money a cheap tractor is never really a cheap tractor after the third repair bill it gets dear quick! But for a small holding ideal, she’s destined for the single rotor when the other two are busy baling, very handy but loud parts are easier to get hold of too for the big Doncaster IH following.

Hi all,

I'm about to buy my first tractor. I'm going to see an international 674... I'm only 16 so it has to be affordable, do you have any other suggestions?
From ireland, if that helps.
674s I think are much better value than equivalent MFs and Fords. Decent power for the size. If you blow your whole budget you will have nothing left for repairs, this way you will be ahead of the game.

Thanks. This makes me feel a bit better about the purchase, as many people have negative views of the little 674. Do you know of anything I should look for when purchasing?

make sure it’s not a hydro as they are a nightmare, check it hasn’t got a t/a ( torque amplifier ) that’s been blanked off on the dash by having the handle removed.

check the clutch and the brakes, and no sign of heavy breathing from the crank case vent tube as this could indicate the o ring on the liners has perished on the 239 series engines. Avoid anything that is using water or has milky oil. But overall easy tractor to learn to spanner on!

i had a 574 for yesrs, it was a really handy little tractor, it was a breather and used oil but to be fair the international engines all seem the same like that, pretty crap, 475 had a Perkins engine which was much better if you could get one of thise you would definately be on a winner!

Apart from that the steering hydraulics etc were much better than equivalents at the time, i had to admire what i believe to be torsion bar suspension on the top links, really commom spool slices so you can upgrade to more spools or double acting and perhaps en extremely primitive form of a forward reverser ha ha.

If the TA is working with no slipping (clutchless splitter) it’s not necessarily a bad thing as with sympathy they will last for ages, just not as good as dual or multi power. Also don’t let it run out of diesel.....

Don’t think 674’s ever had TA’s .
I use to plough with 674 had a ransom 4 furrow plough on it . Used to pull a 3 meter lely rotara . Power Harrow but with tines .
I liked ours . Pretty easy to work on even I can change the clutch in one and I’m ok with spanner’s not great though.
For parts
