New Mccormick Tractors

Hi there,

Actually looking at a McCormick pretty seriously at the moment in NZ. I currently run Claas, but the reliability in my biggest one (Arion 650) is driving me to drink!! Very open to a change in brand, got an excellent dealer locally who does my servicing, and they have taken on the McCormick dealership, which has prompted me to have a look.
Given you are year or two ahead of us in terms of using the X7 models, what are your thoughts on reliability, particularly as they get up to 6,7,8 thousand hours. Also any thoughts on resale value - given I run Claas, my expectations aren't high in this area!
Hi Hungry. Thanks for the message. Don't get me wrong, like everything they have electrical niggles. However the engines, transmissions and hydraulics have been brilliant in terms of reliability. I have a customer with an X7.440VT (cvt) transmission on 12,500hrs and we haven't touched the engine or gearbox. And it has a loader on it and he's the most abusive driver going! Did the clutch packs on his X7.680 powershift at 8,500hrs but it had spent several seasons on a forage wagon that was too big for it first. And he let's the wagon stall the tractor before he stops loading 🤦

The front suspension is fantastic, only beaten by a Fastrac imo. However you must keep it will greased or it will give problems. Though there is now an aftermarket central greasing kit for it to make it easier.

Have had a couple of screens go down in one machine. However this was poor design in the early X7's with screens which now appears to have been sorted.

As for resale values no they aren't in the same league as John Deere, but you pay less to start with! Certainly no worse than Claas.

X7's have a really good standard spec. Don't no of much else with standard exhaust brake! They're also user friendly and intuitive. No star ship enterprise cabs!

Tbh they're a seriously under rated machine. My biggest issue is the name and convincing people to give it a go. However those that have have been really pleased and stuck with the brand.

What model are you looking at? Any other questions just let me know.

They’ve maybe changed to fpt but I’d check. Normally it’s iveco’s in the McCormick’s and their definitely built to a cheaper specification. Problem with McCormick now is their not far off the same price new as the premium makes but haven’t the resale value.
This was certainly the case until recently. Seeing it improve with the new tier V machines. As in bigger gap between them and top end brands. Generally finding them much on a par with NH at present.

Having driven a x7.670 on a 69 plate on harvest for 2020. Overall everyone who drove it liked it, FPT pulled like a train and gearbox was smooth and simple once we got used to it. Carraro front axle is another plus point. List price we where told was £80k, would we have paid it, no. If priced around £65k for the spec we had then maybe. Gripes, cup holders are too small/shallow, the cab is so cheap in feel, touch, rattling panels, ad-blue tank was too small or the FPT was thirsty it struggled to do 15 hrs to a tank when pulling a sumo trio 3 and as a 50k tractor there was no air fitted, should be standard.
Overall, good underlying components let down by a poorly finished cab

Yeah that FPT certainly punches. Guessing this was an early X7 as I see its a PS drive, not a P6.

Early cab finish wasn't great, fortunately whilst the design has remained similar the quality has increased.

Air brakes are now standard on 50kmph as its now a legal requirement.

With ad blue now normally find about 3 tanks of diesel to one of ad blue.

Well done for trying one. A lot of people I have found turn their nose up without giving it a chance.

Forgot to mention the PS, nearly everyone who saw it on the yard or drove it round the field said does it stand for poverty spec! Although the one we had must of been a basic, no electric spools and no screen.

Funny you say early cab finish wasn't great . In this day and age a poor finish in a cab would put off most people from changing brand like it did me when I tried one for a week. How a quality controller could let the x7 650 that I had out of the factory is beyond me . The floor rubber couldn't fit under the trim , the door had a gap at the bottom , the plastic trim couldn't sit whereit was supposed to , a miniature wiper. These things are all easily sorted and should be sorted before assembly even starts . Surely mccormick designers sit in other brands and see what type of finish is expected today. Anyway as for driving, it's as good and probably better than most for power and comfort was tops .

PS was just Powershift I think. The earlier ZF gearbox. Sounds like you had an efficient spec not a premium.

Yeah was a blunder on their part, not going to pretend it wasn't! The tractors are now styled by the previous Masserarti stylist and improved.
