Agree prison will do no good at all in this situation, why not have him doing 33 months of unpaid work in the local community to benefit others, far better to try and get something positive out of this accident rather than lock him up!

Ag trailers are not required to have an MOT or statutory inspection. Yet.

No, but nearly 100% sure that any ex HGV trailer if it’s been plated and held an MOT at any one time must then still hold a valid MOT even when pulled by an agricultural tractor. They are though still required to have regular thorough inspections that need to be recorded on maintenance logs.

In my view Ag vehicles should only pull trailers and equipment designed and certified to be used by them. They should not pull HGV type trailers on the highway anymore than HGVs should pull Ag equipment.

Larger tractors and trailers should be subject to an annual mot.

The current legislation is outdated and designed for 165s and four tonne trailers, not the current large high speed tractors and trailers.

The majority of farmers do run good kit, its just the few who think that road laws don't apply to them, which will ruin it for all.

All road going vehicles in many EU countries are subject to some form of MOT , UK farmers have been given the chance to be responsible for their own machinery , clearly many are not .

Even if there is mot tacos operators license etc introduced there’s still going to be people pushing the rules.

I always understood a 40 ft artic trailer plus dolly exceeds the permitted length of trailer you can pull with a tractor ????

I would bet a lot of HGV accidents are either caused by the driver, or another road user, not defective tractor or trailer units like is being discussed.

It would be interesting to know the lad's employment status and reasons for collecting a heap with an expensive tractor. Terrible shame for all concerned.
I was the same age when I had a proper ag 4 wheeler uncouple from a puh and the drawbar embeded into a bank. Narrow lane fortunately.
Probably the best deterrent would be the automatic confiscation of all equipment concerned including the tractor.

The news article said it had "just been bought." That doesn't excuse the towing of an unroadworthy trailer but the chap wouldn't have known what state he was going to see the trailer in & was just doing as he was told. No mention of his employer in all of this who he was acting for when he collected the trailer.
