North Shropshire Big Liberal Win

Good interview with journalist Peter Oborne on you tube tonight. He has compiled a list of all the Lies Prime Ministers have said since 2000. With the latest incumbent the lie chart is off the scale. The really worrying thing is Oborne is a journalist with integrity and since writing articles about the lies and corruption the main stream media and newspapers are so intertwined with the Tories he can't get his articles printed!

To put things in perspective, Helen Morgan received 17,000 or so votes in total, Owen Paterson had a 23,000 majority last time, that’s 23,000 more than the runner up.

Of course it’s a bit of a shock for the Tory’s, North Shropshire been Conservative for over 200 years.

By elections are funny old things, I voted Lib Dem this time for the first time ever, even got some large placards at the road side for them.
It’s not that I have any rea support for them but I like many others wanted to give the Tory’s a good shake, I was never a fan of Owen Paterson, always had him down as only interested in himself so was glad to see him gone but despite this being a Tory stronghold, the party couldn’t find a decent local candidate or more likely weren’t interested in the locals and wanted to slip one of their own into a safe seat. The Lib Dem’s we’re realistically the only party I could vote for to shake the conservatives, virtually unthinkable that labour stood a cat in hells chance in a Tory stronghold.

Add to that plenty of bad press on the Conservative party recently and it’s easy to see why people didn’t vote for the Conservative candidate, labour and Conservative voters both realising that the only party they could vote for to cause a Tory up set was the Lib Dem’s along with plenty of conservative voters who were totally disillusioned with the conservatives and whilst they didn’t vote for anyone else, they quite simply didn’t bother to vote.

It’s almost unthinkable that North Shropshire won’t return to blue next time although it is to be hoped that the Conservative party pick their candidate more wisely next time instead of trying to parachute in an outsider
Yep, it seems all the Labour voters switched and a couple of thousand Tory ones too, if they all vote the same way again it won't make any difference if the Tories find a decent candidate and don't screw him by creating bad news stories during the campaign. All it will need is the other Tory voters who stayed away this time to turn up, if they do...

As I’ve said before, it happened in Ludlow (south Shropshire) in 2001.
Well done Oswestry. Don’t put up with this.
In Ludlow, giving the Tories a bloody nose meant we needed up with a far better local mp 4 years later (Philip Dunne, although he has gone off the boil).
But the inverted snobs on here will tell you couldn't possibly have been a good MP in any way at all, simply because he went to Eton and was in the Bullingdon Club. (y)

I presume this is a fairly rural area? Maybe a wake up call that if they can't keep hold of the red wall voters they might be in a bit of trouble at the next election as the rural voters aren't happy. If Boris is still leader they certainly be getting my vote and I'm a lifelong Tory.
We are fairly rural with Oswestry being the biggest market town , but not a back water .
it’s been Tory here for 200 years with only John Biffen and Owen Paterson in my lifetime .

Ideal leadership material then HO HO.

Loved how the PM and ex journalist (use the term loosely) tried to blame the press for running story's about him and his government and parties behaviour.
Corrupt is what the previous encumbant was, and the response from the PM was equally corrupt, get what you deserve.

Collectively Tory MPs are ineffective. They are allowing the corrupt incompetent government to continue being corrupt and incompetent. Their interpretation of this by-election shows continuing contempt for the electorate. The Johnson government isn’t in need of more time for policies to work, they need to stop being corrupt. All Tory MPs are doing is giving a total Charlatan more time to prove he’s unfit for office. They are letting their constituents down through their enabling inaction.

But Johnson's plan before the election was to remove any MP who didn't swear loyalty to him. As a consequence we have a zombie cabinet of ministers out of their depth and incapable of any independent thought.

If you're so hot on people not showing contempt for the electorate, where the hell's your defence of it to join mine when @Mek & @czechmate & co. continually deride it and want to take its vote away? 😐

As for corruption and incompetence, naturally - naturally to you anyway - you'll paint all in as bad a light as possible and conflate as many you can together - but the fact is most ministers are competent and decent fellows doing a decent job, competently.

In fairness, you'll have to flag up for us the shining stars in your beloved lefty-liberal parties who you are certain can and would do better if in office. Not interested in playground quips in reply, I want names and evidence of administrative experience and competence... just looking at Labour's shadow cabinet - and the LD's shadow 'shelf'*, and nobody seems inspiring, so please enlighten us. :)

*Hard to think of a small enough piece of furniture to accurately describe theirs...

Oh, come on. With a couple of exceptions they are a bunch of individuals promoted beyond their ability. They are more like contestants for "I'm a Tory minister get me out of here" than a serious group of individuals tasked with taking the UK though a serious crisis. Have a look and tell us which ones inspire you :-
