Difficult to hold yields on shot grass but bf high at 4.2. I've never has bf this high at grass. Speaking to nutritionalist and he says that only 1 in 8 dairy farmers are true grazers now. The rest housed 24hrs ,at night or buffer feeding.

I’d say he’s right do fair bit of work for the contractor and majority have some cows in of some description.
hoping to get 40 acre in today before contractor heads off to the big timers like Z later on in the week ??

I like being a member of a minority group. I've said it before, most around here use grass / pasture as a bedding material.

I think the main reason for housing is increase herd sizes and not a big enough grazing platform around the yard.
I know of very few people housing cows that have an adequate grazing platform accessible from the milking parlour.

Going over grazing with topper here, two fields to do and another for the silo. Holesteins up the road were out late, trampled grass on first day and every day since, eating a feed in the house at night then lying on the grass during the day.

Would controlled starvation work any better?

That has the same effect as licking concrete. Milk drop. Problem with bhgfet feeding pr housed at night is cows stop grazing at 3 till the gate opens and it's on for the easy feed stuff

Agreed but don't feed them in house and milk and fertility drops too. Just as easy to keep them in then.

So we rent more ground for silage, at silly money, further away, more tyre wear, more diesel, bigger slurry tanker, more trailers, no time to poo, a days work driving round checking stock and all because we've been told that milking more cows will be more efficient. o_O
