Quoted £720/t for CAN and £1030/t for 46% protected Urea today. The Urea better value by far but do I hold off ordering for another couple weeks.... That is the question?
Revised price list due from yara on Monday apparently, merchant thinks it will be down. I had a price today for urea at £930 and 16.15.15 at £800

I have a field that needs reseeded. I was thinking of doing whole crop and under sowing it.
I'm a whole crop virgin.
Going to kill off the field tomorrow. Graze it end of week. Disc it next week. Broadcast barley. Harrow in. Broadcast grass seed. Roll.
How much barley per acre to not choke the grass seed?
If the weather breaks, how late can you sow whole crop to have it cutting with 2nd cut?
Any advice greatly appreciated.

Drill the barley, it needs to be fairly deep and all at the same depth. Broadcasting results in seeds at different depths and some on the surface, drilling ensures that it has a good root structure before it emerges or else the crows will strip it, seeds roots and all. A well established root will prevent it from being ripped out of the ground, a shallow root will come out of the ground when the crow tugs on it.

Have you got a plough? Is there much switch grass in it?

Also, are you talking about power harrowing the seed in, or with a break? I'd presume a break would trail the sods.

I've PH'd barley seed in, and I find it fine for wholecrop. Doesn't matter if the germination isn't even. Crows, debatable if depth and root really stops them when they want at it. They'll dig a hole with their beaks.

Six or seven stone acre and a couple of bags of peas if youre feeling exotic !!!
Drill the barley deep broadcasting is not a great job since the seed dressings the crows didnt like got banned .
I usually wait till the barley is peeping before spreading the grass seed but straight after is fine ..
Given the price of meal you might be tempted to put the combine through it .:)

I'm no expert but 3 years ago I ploughed a good dose of thick slurry in ,then drilled in spring wheat for wholecrop ,then the grass seed was put in with an airseeder with tines in late September straight into stubble. Was more than happy with the crop and the sow out .

It won't be ready with second cut unless you're a beef farmer.
