Old water pipes

when we extended our parlour, came across an old thick plastic pipe, which was threaded, to take a fitting. Luckily, it was dry, because l wouldn't have known where to start finding fittings for that.
use pipestock for most fittings.

If you can't find a liner then you can make one with a bit of copper pipe bigger than the internal diameter by cutting a strip out of it with a junior hacksaw or something so that it fits.

learnt a good lesson from a plumbing firm, that does a lot of work for farmers.
as long as you have a clean straight cut, no need to use an insert, having used inserts for decades, we haven't for several yrs now, with no problems. Some of the 'funny' adapters you have to, but the rest, his comment was, 'that's where more profit is made'.
Used to buy the inserts, by the 'bag' off screwfix, or toolstation, a lot cheaper than the local store. Pipe Stock is where we source from.

The insert has nothing to do with the cut. It’s because blue pipe is thinner walled than black. If you didn’t use an insert with blue pipe it would just squash the pipe and would leak.

it doesn't, and we use cheap fittings, and loads of them. No problems at all.
Chap that told us, must use 1,000's, but he does say the cut has to be clean and straight.
and we reuse a lot of fittings, as we swap/move thanks about. Our water pressure runs about 5/6 psi, from our pump, pressure valve. And we use virtually all blue pipe.

What kind of fittings? On philmac etc type fittings a perfectly straight cut makes no difference as it’s the o ring that compresses around the pipe so the cut is irrelevant. I can assure you if no liner is used on blue pipe with that type of fitting it will leak.

What a bizarre statement. @som farmer obviously knows whether or not his fittings leak in his system. At regular mains pressure you may well be right but I have no experience.

Ours don't leak, and I would hate to count the number we have about here. If we get leaks, it is generally because the pipe is scored round the back where you cannot see it, or the O ring is flattened.

l have no idea of who makes the fittings, they come from pipestock, and are at least half the price of plaisson or philmac, and we re-use them, as we move troughs etc.

But, i can assure you, they do not leak if you fit them properly. We use a proper pipe cutter to ensure a clean cut. And stopped buying inserts about 5 years ago.

the only down side, they are probably made in China.
