Open Gate Good Fortune Story

Was going to post this on the "What do you find Grazing in your field?" thread, but thought it better here.

Forgot about this story, and you don't have to believe me. Wife or I had accidentally left a gate open at the farm. Wife noticed on the cellular calving camera and asked neighbor/brother-in-law to go shut it. He did and reported 2 black heifers he captured near the gate opening. Whew... that was close. Except... they weren't our heifers!!! We had left a gate open, and instead of losing ours, we gained someone's loose ones that had wandered in!!!!!! Asked everyone in the area and put the word out. Fed them for a couple/3 months, got them in shape, and sold them at the local livestock auction barn. Fully expecting to have someone claim them, we planned to just give them the money, perhaps minus a little for the hay. The owners never came forward, so we just called it lucky. Unbelievably lucky, but there you have it.

That does beg the question... if this story took place in the UK, those cattle would most definitely have had identification in their ear and it would be recorded somewhere wouldn't it? I'm continually amazed at the watchdog tracking in UK animal agriculture. I don't understand how it all works, but I bet it would've been useful in finding the owners in my case!

Get a stray sheep and ring the local ag office and ask for the name and address of the owner of the flock number on the tag and 'totally unhelpful' is how you would describe their reaction! GDPR rules ok.
