Plan your propyzamide applications with the Kerb Weather Data service (KWD) from Corteva Agriscience. The 24/7 decision support system (DSS) provides an easy postcode checker and traffic light system for local weather conditions, helping farmers and advisors to make local tactical decisions to optimise their AstroKerb® and Kerb® Flo applications, and therefore their activity against blackgrass. The DSS also indicates wind, rainfall and provides a soil temperature summary to help plan spraying workload more effectively.

According to their labels, products containing propyzamide can be applied to oilseed rape from the 1st of October, providing the crop has at least three leaves. However, to make sure the residual activity of these herbicides is optimised against blackgrass and other grass weeds, soil temperatures need to have fallen below 10°C whilst soil moisture should be sufficient but not saturated. Applications must not be made if a heavy rain event is forecast.

When the traffic light is on red, as indicated on the web and mobile app version of the Kerb Weather data (KWD) service, soil temperatures may be too high, propyzamide (the active ingredient in Kerb Flo 500 and AstroKerb) will breakdown quickly and blackgrass control may be compromised. In forward crops, large canopies may be closing in rows before the KWD service indicates green for go. Corteva Agriscience™ trials over many years have shown blackgrass control from propyzamide is not impeded by large crop canopies. Always adhere to stewardship guidelines especially with respect to water, to help ensure we keep essential active ingredients, like propyzamide, in our armoury to help grow our crops.

The full Kerb Weather Data web-based service is available on our website.

The postcode checker / traffic light system is also available via the Corteva Arable App and can be downloaded for free via Google Play and the App Store (Search “Corteva Arable”).

*** WIN: Download the Corteva Arable App between 20 October – 10 November 2020 and stand a chance of winning a soil thermometer and snood. Search “Corteva Arable” on Google Play and the App Store ***

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.
