I know it looks like snake oil! But we have had considerable success with lowering the cell count of individual cows with garlic boluses, so I am becoming more open minded to these more natural antibiotics. Thoughts?

Interested in your results re garlic boluses if you wouldnt mind sharing more details? I have a couple of cows with high scc and what with only milking 80 it doesnt take many cows to bring my average up!

It is highly likely that in time we will be forced to use seaweed extract to reduce burping so there is probably a lot to plant extracts that will come to our aid.

As an aside, lavender scent is supposed to calm jumpy cows.

The problem being how much each of these plant extracts are going to cost us will they be the new megalac and butterfat extra...

We’ve used AHV boluses , similar idea , we have had positive results too and some don’t respond. We try to target them before they hit those figures. Some heading to single figures others never changed

When a cow gets mastitis, we treat them with antibiotics, this clears the infection, but most of the time they still have a high cell count, so we then give them the garlic boluses. 2 at once, and that will generally be all that’s needed to drop the call count back below 200
