Osr chancer in then

We only zero-tilled 2.2 kg/ha and we have a lovely crop....
Slug pellet once after rolling as a matter of course. No point coming back later to pellet a crop that's already had the damage done

So we think we’ve got 85% cover so the £26.73/acre total cost for 100% will now effectively be 15% (or thereabouts) higher. Still extremely acceptable at around £31/acre all in. Next spend will be herbicides in a few weeks time.

A couple of days after no tilling the osr in we no tilled some mustard, phacelia, canary seed and linseed at 25kg/ha which has all come good without any pellets or fertiliser so maybe we need osr rates off the heap at 25kg/ha to save on pellets and fert passes?

Need to weigh up whether some soil movement, 2 passes with pellets and 30kg/ha N is better than just upping the seed rate to 25kg/ha off the heap and walking away completely? Although I also quite like the idea of companion cropping osr with something. I wonder whether spring linseed that will naturally die off over winter would be an option?

Today.

Few bits still only just at 3 leaves.

For costing about £30/ac all in so far I’m happy.

Odd bare patch but not as bad as first thought so I reckon 10% maximum but will get the drone out this week to have a better look.

Succumbed to centurion max application as the first chemical pass through the sprayer. We also think it’s actually more like 5% of lost crop not 10%.

Not brilliant but also not to bad for a crop that’s been treated as a cover crop.

Here mine yesterday looking pretty in the sunshine - gate shut until harvest and no more spent than above, notill, no bought seed, no sed treatment, no insecticide, no fungicide. Just FSS, herbicide and N.

Its pretty consistent as well, no bad headlands or thin patches from slugs or pigeon to drag our average yield down which is so often the case with OSR crops ! NEVER again will I drill OSR at some stupid low seed rate !! just too risky IMO

the average VC costs is a bit lower overall as one block has had a lot less bought in N using pig slurry and digest instead - overall average spend is £210/ha

On track for a decent margin but still a lot that can go wrong between now and harvest I guess !

Smashing looking crop and congratulations on your spend profile, it's very impressive from this side of the computer screen! Could I ask was it disc or tine DD established?

My co6 low disturbance conversion in this case

This is the crop on that block of land being established

will you not be tempted with a fungicide at petal fall @Clive just as an insurance if anything ?

Will look at forecast models and weather at the time - I would rather not but if it looks like there is MOIC from doing so then I have open mind

It’s not quite full flower yet so a bit of time to consider it yet

It does seem a more sustainable way of doing it. Ok you may not get very top yields but you will always have a crop.

@Clive are you leaving the joys of clearfield then? And presumably your seed field will be sown at the lower rate?

I cannot get OSR disc drilled into barley to grow satisfactorily. I think Wheat has less stubble toxins - maybe this is an explanation as to why barley is generally seen as a better competitor?

No clearfield here for the first in 4 years. It’s served it’s purpose and with low disturbance drilling and depleted seed bank I think we can get away without now
