OSR crop loss claims for shoots.

Just wondering what other people do here.

I lost 10ha of headlands this yr.

Definitely not a weather issue as the middle of the fields are fine, and all lost in aug/sept last yr.

Conservative yield and price projections, less cost of growing and operations comes out at say £550/ha.

What do other people do where the same happens?

Many thanks

Put an upturned shopping basket etc over the young crop to stop grazing.

There has been lots of rape (and cereals) failed on headlands but mainly due to compaction and waterlogging.

In my experience at establishment winter OSR can be best on the headlands where there is most moisture, so long as it doesn't get eaten by the birds... Later in the season, yes i get you, but in August?

i need a few more shopping baskets!

I charge our shoot for lost area, since they are responsible for vermin control too. Full gross margin minus any inputs not applied.

No doubt your lot will claim slug, rabbit or pigeon damage is outside their remit...

How did the shoot cause 10ha of headlands to fail?

Whose land is it on? Who gets the money for the shooting rights? What’s your relationship like with the shoot/landowner?

It All depends, if you’re secure in your tenancy/ you own the land and you’re not too bothered about the shooting then bill them for it. If the situation is a bit more sensitive it might be prudent to tread carefully and maybe use it as evidence for a rent reduction perhaps.

i have not found headlands near pheasant pens are any more likely to fail than than headlands next to woods that have no pheasants in

the pheasants are too lazy to eat rape compared to the feed pellets

pheasants do eat slugs

but i do not have experience of thousands released in one wood

also i do not now grow rape as there are many other pests and crop failure is the norm even 2 miles from any pheasant pens
