Fair point about it being on here. it's all the anti farmer stuff that will now be everywhere else that is anger some and it really does not help when a farmer on here says they haven't watched it, don't condone it and then pretty much say what you said above, we all have to stand together when a farm is mistreating their stock. We should never look the other way or ignore cruelty and that is what the documentary showed, an utter disregard for suffering in some of the cases. Keep in mind Monbiot and his followers have lifted quotes from here in the past and possibly misconstrued them but they are still used on twitter etc
Monbiot etc couldnt be turned towards supporting farming no matter what we say . We live in a world where the news is all about violence and abuse 24/7 so folks are immune to it all. This story will be chip paper in a day or two. Hopefully the people in the program will be investigated and the world keeps turning. Proper horror animal abuse goes on in china daily with animals skinned alive at meat markets and stunned by slamming there heads on the pavement, i dont see packam and monbiot out there.

I think we are all beaten down to the point where we are losing interest and fast. 99% of farmers care dearly for their livestock and treat them in the best way possible. But unless some sort of feel good factor returns for what we are producing the industry will be in terminal decline.

I am not a farmer but grew up in mid wales surrounded by farmers and the rural life.
I was absolutely shocked, disgusted and cried when i saw the shocking footage that was metered out to those defenseless and big hearted animals
No excuse for any of that behavior
I am well aware of the issues farmers face and also the fact many dont care as they prehaps should for their animals BUT nothing on this scale
I mean its just heartless and cruel
Our local farm demostrates really good animal welfare and i know many farmers care and love their animals
They are not fit to be able to look after cows.
Poor animals to be living there. The owner should hang his head in shame

If we had a sort of effective national body to speak for farmers, they'd be on message now stating that this sort of thing is disgusting, doesn't represent any but the smallest percentage of farmers and there are sensible rules and laws already in place. After all, the BBC bosses wouldn't like to have all of its current affairs content judged solely on the actions of Martin Bashir, would they? That's the line that should be taken, if we had a decent mouthpiece for the industry. 😐

No bloody excuse for moving cows like that, hoist is for lifting, Today all farms have big handler buckets, lots of staff in that footage , there to push into bucket, I have been plastered in slurry rolling slipped cows into a bucket or onto gate with straw flaps on, that is just with two people .Totally disgusting behaviour, the farmer needs shaming the damage that has done to us. Why the heck would you lose it with those calves ,hitting with a shovel. Beyond belief, Sick cattle which have got to stage that there is no hope, should be shot same day, no excuses in my book, even it involves separate vet visit, if nobody else can do it. What a p R disaster.
The hoist is a difficult one and I will admit that I’ve used it in ways I’m not that comfortable with in my hour of need. The proviso to this is that I’m by and large on my own and at times beyond my physical limitations. When doing so I move them quickly as possible to the straw yard and give pain relief and steroids.
At times we are forced to make difficult decisions to create a better outcome. The issue within the filming and that farm is the fact that there was and would have been multiple people available to facilitate a roll into a bucket as a safer move.

Where possible we lift into a bucket or use a strap underneath the brisket to support.

That is spot on. Why or how can anyone treat such beasts like that. It defies belief

as upsetting as the filming was I don’t think it’s appropriate to share the name of the farm. He will have enough sh!t on his doorstep now without some wannabie activists adding to the issue.

I dont see why not? Its in the public domain already. He said in response if he had been made aware would have been a disciplinary issue. Sorry but what world does he live in? He has no right to stay hidden and unamed. I am not advocating anything should be done by so called activists but he should be roundly shamed for his farms actions

Low prices drove the 50 to 100 cow men out of milking. They were the most efficient with only family labour who would never maltreat their own animals.
Now these mega farms run by accountants employ morons.
Agreed. I was on an ex dairy farm a while ago and the farmer was talkkmg about when they had alot of cows tied up in the byre , nice and warm and plenty staff they used to groom the cows most days like horses , great 😊 all gone now sadly .

I know many farmers i grew up with would be absolutely heartbroken to see these scenes so yes i agree they would deplore this and shouldnt be tarred with the same brush. Seeing hill farmers care for their sheep in some godforsaken welsh weather shows you how hard they work for their animals and then you have these evil farm workers turn up on the tv.

That’s my opinion I guess because otherwise it turns into a witch hunt which has the potential to cause more stress to cows as people descend there as they now no doubt will.

I will also add as with every video I see like this when was it filmed? The guy doing the secrete filming is as much to blame as the boss and the people doing the abuse!

50 cow family worked high animal welfare farms all loosed housed and grazed on grass six months+ of the year with no calves shot because they were worthless and then the experts put most out of business and forced the rest through price to keep hundreds upon hundreds on massive units pumping out millions of gallons of slurry in a small area with calves becoming a byproduct and now it comes home to roost but the farmers get the blame and not the advisers.

Why isn't there a proper farm being shown in exactly the same program to show how it should be done? Even if it has to be nfu paid,
nfus defence should have been they need to film propper farms, every industry will have bad ones, plenty restaurant/takeaways filmed but they don't promote only home cooking do they?
All this in Oxford banning meat and dairy, 2 days a week school meals plant based where is the nfu counter arguing it's people's choice what to eat?, It's probably an offence not to offer a vegan alternative now so why shouldn't a propper meal including a portion of meat/dairy be offered? Same with halal!!!
