Patching silage bales this time of year

The lad delivering spikes them to load/unload, is it necessary to patch them?

Providing they're solid bales can't see much point to be honest, trying to patch wet wrap is a bad job at the best of times

Not for a fortnight, no - assuming you're in the northern hemisphere and it's winter with you. I'm leaving mine almost a month and they're not a problem, but it's rarely above 0C at the moment.

Depends how fussy you are, 2 weeks is pushing it imo . We clamp where we can but would not spike if they can't be used in under a week

I'll slap on a patch or strip of tape, and have done as you suggest, as it helps keep the patch on better.


Longevity will depend on the DM of the bales....

YOU could always rewrap them @£5 a bale for a £15 bale.

Me personally for 2 weeks keep 'em tight.

I had some cattle get at a batch last summer and I taped the rips and holes, then a layer of wrap to keep the repair dry. Feeding now and seems to have worked well. Bad tears had 4 layers! :-(

If he's to tight to buy a proper bale lifter then stick some tube over the forklift tines
