As we grow for seed we pretty much get what we are given seed dressings wise, which almost always seems to be Wakil XL nowadays from two different companies.

To my knowledge you can't put any fungicide seed treatment on at the moment except Wakil. And that is usually only put on stock that needs it or specialist human consumption varieties like Sakura or Kabuki as it pretty expensive.

Thiram was the standard but that is just another useful product that has gone out the window!

It was there to protect against Damping Off, which I agree is not a major issue on peas but for the sake of about £10 a tonne I thought it was worth it.

My comment on Thiram was as much in relation to lots of crops; veg, linseed, osr, sugar beet etc In some of those crops it controlled or helped control Alternaria and other seed borne diseases. In some cases we have no alternative or if we do it is very expensive compared to Thiram.

Wakil seems to make emergence of early sown peas much more reliable. The metalaxyl, active against water moulds, perhaps stymies the pythium and phytophthora that rot off seeds in cool wet ground.

A Feb/March showing in this dry district and sandy loam usually crops much better than later sowings.
