Perkins starter ring

I was hoping it was the starter that was gone but after taking it off the starter ring gear is very worn especially in one section. It's a perkins 1004 turbo in my backhoe. Are these engines known to wear the starter ring? 12500 hours on it.

To say it's so worn in one patch in particular does that mean the engine is stopping in a certain position the majority of the time.

Most not all engines usually stop in a similar position so will wear the starter ring in the one spot I remember heating one to expand it and turning it a bit to keep going with a view to replacing it when we had more time, machine was sold 4-5 years later and hadn't missed a beat

Well fOOked. put new one on but make sure you put it on the right way around.
It's just i have a few days work to do with it really before I sent it off to the mechanic to take out the engine to do it.

If I put back in the starter have I any way of starting it then if she stops in the wrong section. With it being torque I can't start it on the run.

I opened this little cover under the torque are these m8 bolts the one holding on the ring?

the bolts are the driving plate for the torque converter.
The ring gear is a shrink fit, heat it up in an oven for a few hours then drop it onto the flywheel.

No they hold the drive plate to the flywheel.
A temporary work around is to turn the engine by hand to a different position, maybe turning the fan blades or a screwdriver into flywheel teeth if there is an access hole

I would say the problem has been caused by starter motor where the starter gear is turning before fully engaging
there’s a lot of swarf inside housing which could cause further problems

My 3 cyclinder perkins engine in my jcb 803 did the same thing. 3 worn patches on the ring. Wasn't too bad a job to change for a new one. Leave flywheel in freezer over night and new ring in the rayburn. I guess knoicking it off and putting it back in a different position would have worked too to some degree. But new genuine one wasn't dear.

a quick bodge is to file the burs off the teeth. Otherwise its engine out and new gear. Gears are cheap just the time involved changing it.
Cheers. What I need really is a bodge job to allow me to get it to start another 5 times or so until I get my work done with it and can send it off then to get the engine out of it. Once I get it started I can leave it running for the day.
