Can someone explain why the pig price has collapsed and how low is it in comparison to what it was in GB. And if it is bad why is there a massive growth in pig units for fattening in Northern Ireland?

... and so a lot of EU pork is turning back across the memeber states and some is coming here. Add to that the problem of exporting our bits oftrimmings, rind, ears etc. which used to have a market within the EU - and now hasn't and you have a perfect storm for our pig producers.

roughly the price of wheat in pounds per tonne in pence per deadweight kilo for the pork.

Last year wheat £145, pigs 160p - happy pig farmer

This year wheat £205, pork 135p - thin and miserable pig farmer.

Main issue is old Sows as they have nowhere to go especially from the smaller producer.

Saw some in Ashford market make less than £10.00. Apparently one was in pig and had 9 piglets. Not sure in the present scenario whether that was a bonus or a loss maker!!
