No !!! Its at best 800 heads a sqm in places down to 200...i want 1000 even across paddock minimum...

Very interesting growing spring barley....agro wants me to try linseed...but ive not read good things about harvesting it?

Linseed is a weird crop.

I don't know about your weather but once you have sprayed it off, you can find you can combine 50 acres in the blink of an eye or spend all day trying to thrash out 5 acres with constant blockages and the like.

Be wary with your weed control, you have some exotic weeds and it might pay to ask what chemistry you can use/obtain.

I hear ya, tread with caution...i'd grow winter beans and spring barley etc before doing that...harvest weather is the biggest concern..

have experienced that with linseed, if sun not shining dont even think about cutting it. It just wraps round everything

I'm sure it isn't. I'd rather mine was looking well tillered and a bit yellow like my neighbours does rather than sparse and green and small as mine does......

We have been growing winter barley here for fifty years and we have never known a year yet when it hasnt gone yellow at some point. It an attribute of wb and has little impact on final yield imo.

I agree. That's what l was saying. Rather thick and yellow than thin weedy and green.

Our barley is still looking unusually green (and not yellow). We have DAP to go on first. Just trying to decide when is no longer too early to spread it.

I will be going in with N & S around mid feb if weather allows and thats still a bit dodgy,any earlier and you risk losing it if we get any more winter.

Hmm. I don't look at dates at this time of the year. I prefer to see active crop growth and a mild forecast before I'd think about getting the fertiliser out.

Agreed, i just use the mid feb date as a starting point but of course it all depends on conditions.

Lighter soil. Warmer. Are you using urea or CAN?

Rate of soil warming and fert type are big factors. Hence why I have stopped using urea on the barley.

Its impossible to say, here it can vary from a minus figure to + 1 tonne an acre depending on weather.
Last year the springs comfortably out yielded winters but i reckon usually its 1 - 2.5 t/ha.
