I find the thing that makes almost the most difference is a neck gaiter thingy.
If your neck, feet and arms are warm, the rest is fine.

Relatives in Manitoba are in -30s this week.
The neck sleeve I use when out on the motorbike is perfect and last winter was the first I thought to wear it in work wish I’d thought of it years ago it’s only thin cotton doubled up but by Christ it makes a difference

Ordinary trousers, shirt and jumper with boiler suit and fleece type jacket or waistcoat on top. Hat.
Mrs W bought me a silk vest recently. I thought it was a bit Herman Goring but it helps a bit as it’s another layer, doesn’t restrict movement, is low friction etc. I never take it off.
I actually get colder at night in bed than when I am up and about. Bedroom unheated, soon be down to about 5 deg c, but heat does my sinuses and trying to heat 2 foot thick damp sandstone just pees money away. Two duvets on.
Get brushed cotton sheet and quilt cover, other half just fitted them bed warm to get into in unheated room, currently away at 5 lakes resort in Essex only need boxers in bed had to turn heating off suppose its insulated here too .better go pool opens shortly 🙌

I typically wear minimal clothing till it gets truly cold. So long johns, jeans, wool socks and a couple shirts. I’ll put a hoodie on most mornings. When it gets truly cold then the coat comes out and some un insulated overalls and insulated boots. I am a believer in letting your body adapt to the conditions first then add insulation when it’s needed.

Long periods of time outside in an open tractor or 4 wheeler with no escape then throw in a strong wind, mud ice and snow, wet and you quickly learn what you are made of. Awkward, exposed working positions and just spending entire days exposed to the cold can really take it out of you.

It usually doesn’t get much colder than -20 here though.

Devold expedition merino wool long johns and base layer, fantastic. Not restrictive, not too hot, don’t get smelly, last for years.
