Twenty years ago there was a rule/scheme where some animals had to be slaughtered before 30 months of age, [ maybe still there] did this apply to males / females, dairy, beef, l remember it being there but forgot what it entailed.

All bovines, it was to do with the possibility of BSE/nvCJD.

As time goes by I remember less, but I’m sure in the early days of BSE everything over 30 months went to the burner.

This was later changed to the spinal cord had to be removed at slaughter meaning more work/cost so OTM cattle traded at a discount

There is/was something similar with sheep too regarding removal of the spinal cord over 12 months.

I’m sure someone will remember in greater detail than me.

Twenty yearss ago, sure it all kicked off about 89/90 so over 30.

It was 96 when the infamous Stephen Dorrell stood up in the Commons and said what he said , followed by Prof Richard Lacey and his hours of airtime dishing out misinformation to anyone that would listen.
My memory might be hazy but I have a gut feeling the sh!t hit the fan in some way about 89/90, BSE May well have been around before that, just got a feeling something happened/changed about then.
