Re: Would like advice please regarding artifical insemination

Hi,

I have today had a heifer artificially inseminated with the semen of her sire, in error. What is your advice about what to do with her?
Is there a chance that she will give birth to a normal calf?

I didn't realise what I had done until I saw on the heifer's BCMS records that she had been sired by the same bull as I had her artificially inseminated today. She is actually a half bred Angus.

went to a dairy sale, 3 generations of female, all sired by 1 bull ! They looked fine. Another dairy farmer stopped milking, sold the best, kept the rest as sucklers, aa/jer bull, home bred, 12 yrs down the line, with no new blood, or castration, or sales, there were some very strange cattle running around, calf deaths were very high, he got himself into a place, he couldn't find his way out. We all helped, and got it sorted, but...

down a 1 mile track, then farm going back from there, no one could see them, he didn't say anything, when he did, we acted. Certainly 50 % calf deaths, all he had to do, was say something, but I suppose you get past a stage, of asking.
He won't be the last. Farmings a lonely old life.

That's terribly sad. Well done to you and your community for helping out and resolving the situation.

don’t panic. On a one off it’s fine. Wouldn’t recommend doing numbers that way.

Strange cattle in what way? visibly strange, or strange behaviour??

behavior, wild, but hardly ever handled, great twisted horns, some quite impressive, but mainly colours and shapes, with some funny looking female backends, not that many cows/hfrs actually got incalf, come the end, biggest 1/2 of what did, calves didn't live, so effect there.

I agree, we’ve had the odd heifer caught by her father and the calves have been fine. Perhaps they didn’t grow quite so well but not too bad. Also the one time we kept one on as a cow her fertility was poorer than the rest, taking longer to get back in calf.
