RED ii, How it works in USA

In the US, the EU have certified a scheme that uses a farmer self-declaration. No inspector or auditor needed on farm (if I understand it correctly).

Click the download from that page to see what the US farmer needs to declare. It's quite straightforward.

Edit. On the twitter thread posted below to see the USA farmer's self-declaration form. Looks simple.

So we can do something similar in the UK. No RT inspector required, so we mustn't swallow the RT rhetoric and think RT is going to be the only way to achieve RED ii compliance and access to biofuels markets.

I also note TASCC is an approved scheme. So does that mean our TASCC merchant can do it for us if we're not FA?

Click on 'Approved voluntary schemes' in the above link.

If TASCC merchant can't do it, then we need NFU or AHDB to register as a voluntary scheme for members/levy payers who aren't FA. Can be self-declared like the US scheme is.

Seems as though the RED schemes need to be approved by the EU.

It also seems to be relatively straightforward. Furthermore, it seems as though there is no requirement to be farm level audited, but rather a farmer self-declaration is acceptable.

We need to compete on a global stage. Therefore one might expect DEFRA, AHDB, NFU or similar organisation to arrange something. Particularly as not all farmers are RT/SQC.

Would be interesting to find out what TASCC merchants/stores can do, as TASCC is an EU approved RED ii scheme.

Just when we might have been mistaken to think RT was the only way to get RED ii approval, it seems there might be other avenues.

I'd hope other choices become available to UK growers in order for us to remain competitive.

It does make me wonder why any of our industry representatives haven't done something about it. Maybe they will now they are aware.

good work Steve

seems there maybe other ways to skin a biofuel market cat afterall

I’m more shocked at Tom Bradshaw admission on twitter that he / the nfu was not aware of something you found out maybe a lower cost / simple option in a few hours

that demonstrates the danger of not questioning and that they clearly just do, say and defend as RT / AIC or government dictate

even if this turns out to not be an option for uk farmers re red2 they are negligent for not investigating

It didn't take me a few hours to find out.

About 5 mins. Or maybe not quite as long as that.

If I was employed to look into such things, I'd have done it 18 months ago.

Not certain how an organisation become EU approved, but it seems reasonably simple criteria.
