Renewable energy, net-carbon-zero pledge

In 2019, the NFU (National Farmers Union) set an ambitious pledge for British agriculture to reach net-carbon-zero by 2040. Agriculture is a unique industry acting as both a source of carbon emissions while also having the ability to remove carbon from the atmosphere through its practices. As farmers we have the ability to grow 100% British food which is sustainable and safe.

In the UK the collective production of greenhouse gases from farming is approximately 45m tonnes of carbon dioxide produced each year – roughly one tenth of the UK’s greenhouse gas production. Even though this figure is lower than in 1990, there is still a requirement for change.

At Oxbury, we are supporting farmers who are reacting to this and creating opportunities for carbon emissions reduction and active carbon mitigation on farm whether that is being done through changes to farming methodologies, renewable energy, increasing soil organic matter, changing animal feeds or tree-planting - just to name a few. And there is the potential to see greater government support through the introduction of the new Environmental Land Management (ELM) scheme that will come into force in 2024. For farming businesses, sustainability has always been important, but we expect that there will be increased pressure from consumers, processors and government to meet new standards in the coming years.

Oxbury was the first UK bank to fully mitigate the production of all of our own direct emissions and those of our employee since the founding of the company. We are, therefore, entirely carbon-neutral and plan to maintain this position as we grow and to support all of customers on this important journey to net zero.

As the only UK bank 100% dedicated to farmers, where every pound saved with Oxbury goes to support British farmers and nothing else, we have creating a new Savings Account - Oxbury Forest Saver - that will allow any individual to mitigate their own carbon footprint while supporting British farmers, the rural economy, mitigating carbon emissions and enhancing biodiversity. Partnering with Forest Carbon, the first issue of Oxbury Forest Saver facilitates the planting of trees at Ruddenleys Farm in the Scottish Borders.
