Replacement engine for generator

Looking for an old school 4 cylinder turbo diesel engine replacement for a diesel generator.

The current perkins (mf 188) engine is a bit low on hp at around 80hp we feel for the generator.

What could we choose from that's still 4 cylinder that has around 100 or 110 hp? And doesn't have any electronics on it.

A turbo 4 pot of 80-90hp (eg Perkins 1000 / 1100) will be fine as it will be making alot more power & torque at 1500rpm due to it being a turbo charged engine than your NA old skool Perkins. You will need a Generator specific engine with close tolerance governor or electronic governor, to keep the rpm's and thus frequency constant as the load changes. An on-Road or ag governor wont be any good.

Is there anything available that's more powerful again in 4 cylinder or that can be tuned up a bit to 100 or 110hp?

I’d question if it’s worth it. You can have a nice modern silenced 20kva with Kubota engine for a couple grand.

Certainly worth looking into tbh, we don't know but the op might have a Genny setup which revs higher than a modern silenced lower rpm setup so could be a good saving to be had in fuel going forward.

This - get an up to date package. If you need a generator you really need to be able to rely on it. We’re changing a couple because the engines are not up to running in the peak of summer at full load without getting too hot. Peak temperatures are higher now when they were out in 20-30 years ago.

I wish I could find one that cheap

ive recently been looking for a 20 kva generator

a new Kubota engined one is around $20K here, good second hand ones are hard to find

I’m currently hiring one ( Perkins engine, FG Wilson alternator ) for $1300 a week

If it’s a Perkins tractor type engine it must be a 236 or 248 engine? Find a turbo version from a different application, bus, lorry, digger etc. injector pump will need setting up slightly different to obtain peak power at correct rpm etc

Mate bought a silenced 220KVA CAT genny brand new for £22k 12 months ago.
He ran it for 500 hrs and it saved him £5000, net of fuel cost, on electricity. Different sums today though.

Careful what you're doing here, most generators have been matched to the engine or vice versa.

It's easy to give it more hp and then burn out the generator, generator should always be the boss of the pairing not the other way round

Like the old days get a bigger tractor on the old drag forager, until it blew the forager up.
