The time has come to replace our D3. Used by Mrs HK for general farm / town running around, some longer UK holiday trips and for picking up and running around the grandchildren. Ideally we'd like another 'solid' feeling SUV, say 3 years old, 30k, diesel (or petrol), occasional towing of 2000kg, these are our thoughts. Budget is around £20 - £25k:

D4 - lots of 'em but somewhat unaffordable and still possible and costly reliability issues
Discovery Sport - lightweight? - and reliability issues
Jeep Grand Cherokee - chased a few on or above budget - sold quicker than we can react
Skoda Kodiaq - seems ok on paper - but not enthused
VW Touareg - uppish in price and seem to sell quicker than the Jeeps
Hyundai Santa Fe - no experience of this brand
Kia Sorrento - as above no experience

Grateful for any opinions as I don't really do family passenger cars :)

I'd opt for a pickup with a canopy personally, they're so much more car like these days (if you can live with the length).

You could get most the popular ones brand new in your budget and they hold their money well

Would stay away from the Discovery Sport! Nice vehicle, have one as a company car, but there are horror stories out there about oil dilution with diesel etc. 2 I know of a work have had serious engine issues at 75k and mine has some awful rattling, which LR say is just normal wear and tear!

Audi Q7. On our second one in a row, which is the first time we've ever replaced the family car with another of the same.

It's a dreadfully numb thing to drive, but it's been a brilliant family workhorse and ferried our kids around in total safety.

The Audi is fugly. The Porsche is a lot prettier and the interior will be top notch. Buy second hand for a song, too. Dunno what your annual mileage is but a petrol one could be bought for sod all I would suspect.

Volvo worth a shout but not sure on what it can tow.

Merc ML worth a look and a fair few about.

After driving a D3 or similar a pick up will seem hideous.

Well worth looking at a petrol because they depreciate like bombs.

for 25k you should be able to easily get a nice 16 reg discovery 4 aka the last ones made,

theres loads, i bet you could even get one with slightly higher miles from a lr dealer then you get 2 year warranty.

just noted now its only 12 months warranty, perhaps you could haggle longer?

found you one, low miles too

i have to say i loved my discovery 3, took it all over Europe with 4 kids,

the disco 4 is a different league, much more power, MUCH better fuel economy and nicer interior.
