Rouge x texel ewe lambs

We have bought a rouge x Texel shearling ram for this year. As it now turns out my Texel that I use to produce ewe lambs crosses for ewes may not be fit to tup many ewes after all. So unless I buy another my only option for ewe lambs for next year will be out off the rouge x texel ram. Have for a few opinions locally on them but was wondering if any one else had any thoughts on the resulting ewe lambs ?

Breed wise that will be fine for producing ewe lambs. Quality wise (your new tup) I have no idea.

Thank you that’s given me peace off mind. This is the ram I have bought. He’s a shearling

Depends on your ewes. I’ve used a pure Rouge and lambed the offspring as Hoggs, we had some mothering problems with the ones out of Beltex ewes and I think they would have been better not lambed until shearlings. The ones out of mules are fine.

They are milky and lambs are very easy born, ideal for using on hogs , they sell well , but like a Charolais are a bit bare skinned for outdoor lambing or bad weather . Your tup looks good and being half Texel will probably give more wool cover

I have a mix off Suffolk and Texel crosses and have a batch off mules this year to. I actually bought a pure rouge ram lamb today to go to my ewe lambs this year

I'd probably avoid using him on Mules to keep ewe lambs off, the Rouge and the Leicester in the mix may cause some pretty thin skinned sheep to keep as ewes
Many moons ago I found when I used a Charollais on mules that the Leicester and the Char genetics came together to make some bare headed gremlins.

Agreed

Some folk love Charley on mules but i think they must be buying the half texel ones

Bought the mules specially to go to my Texel ram and off course he’s one that’s taken poorly and mightn’t be up for the job

I would suggest that he may not be 50% Rouge. Far too good, and tight/bare skinned for that imo.

Tidy enough ram, but I’m not sure I’d be looking at him as a breeder of female replacements.

As far as I’m aware from seller hes 50/50 Texel rouge. If I can manage to find myself another ram il be able to test him this year to see what lambs are like. Makes me worried relying on one ram to pick replacements from. If they turn out poorly then I’m stuck for a year
