Sausages now ok

NHS - speaks thusly:

All the evidence was assessed to be low or very low certainty. This means the pooled studies give an unreliable estimate of the effect of red or processed meat consumption. The true effect may be very different to these results. You need to use considerable caution when basing recommendations on such evidence, which is why the recommendation is "weak"

Best go easy on processed meat sadly, God I love bacon.
Go for it! Nobody loved a good fry-up including lots bacon and sausages more than a late uncle of mine , yes he is my 'late' uncle but he lived to be 91 (Having said that he hardly drank and NEVER smoked).

Good point that!

Everyone loves to quote “bacon double risk of heart attack” or such.

Yet if they did a list of harmful things with “points” allocated smoking, alcohol, obesity etc would likely be at the top of the list with say 10,000 points and one rasher of bacon a day could well be at 50 or some such....right alongside the risk associated with driving a car to work each day.

Putting things in perspective is important, but not sensational and doesn’t sell papers or new food fads.

No I have it on very good authority, that if you live 100% vegan, don’t drink and obviously none of the other vices, you will live forever.
At least you will think so :):):)
over the pond, a vegan couple have been charged with murder, for killing their 18 month old son, they had him on a diet of fruit and nuts only, he was 1/2 weight he should have been, also charged with 'failing to care properly' they were well underweight as well, put into care. They wouldn't agree they were doing anything wrong.

Proper homemade Award winning sausages from the Local Butchers here... Bit more money but worth the extra... If you read everything it'll all kill you.
Quite right. Butchers made sausages are light years better than some of the packaged mass produced things. They have a decent meat content to start with. I support a localish small farmer that invested in a farm shop and deli. Not the cheapest price but the best quality and I know many of his suppliers. His red meat is outstanding! Happy to support him

I don’t believe any of these articles about certain foods being good or bad for you, since most nutrition “research” has been mainly based on food questionnaires which are completely unreliable, and any supposed effects are very small.
The main thing which I believe is bad for us is obesity.

Think I've got this right - an outwardly slim person can be obese, if they carry large amounts of their body fat internally?

id Rather die 5 years younger and eat what the fudge I want
as someone said, you can forego all the 'life limiting' goodies, exercise properly, don't smoke/drink, and live your extra 5 years, the result, all your savings, house etc will be spent on your last 5 years, sat in a chair, dribbling your food, incontinent nappies, family hoping you don't go on to long etc. Dementia is the big worry, but it does have the advantage, of not realising all the above is happening to you !

made 1,000's of sausages, the secret is, plenty of fat, that puts the taste and texture in them, too little fat, = dry tough sausages, to much, you get a panful of fat !

It's getting to the stage now where these stories need a "warning - epidemiology study" label in bold letters across the top. They really do come up with some guff. This story just shows how scientists can come up with the wrong conclusion at times because they just don't think enough.

Sounds like I better up my sausage intake before I need to wear nappies!

The thing that annoys me about all this sort of thing is when terms such as "doubles your risk" are bandied around - it's sensationalist & doesn't give context. For instance a study I looked at recently said there was a trippling of the risk associated with an action without making clear that the original action only carried a risk of 1:750,000 - so a big percentage increase in the "risk", but still hardly a significant net risk overall.

Nothing wrong with it being an epidemiological study, is where and how the data was collected that is often highly questionable. In the world academia data sets are highly desirable and the more papers you can wring out of it the better. The problems arise when for example a longitudinal survey designed to look specifically at ageing is then used to extract data on something it wasn't designed for like vegan health benefits. Also, there are a number of well known long term general surveys on the go, these are often referenced as the prime data source, yet you know it cannot supply many of the inférences in the paper quoting them.

I've been saying this for years. Our knowledge of human nutrition is poor at a scientific level never mind a consumer level.

I have found in recent months that the knowledge of the general medical practicioners (at least here) in relation to human nutrition is very poor. From past experience I have always suspected the UK doctors to be similarly not informed. They are not trained in nutrition, but expect everyone, including farmers who have spent decades following animal nutrition to accept what they say - lose weight and pop these pills.

Think I've got this right - an outwardly slim person can be obese, if they carry large amounts of their body fat internally?

It is a long time ago, but I once saw somebody at a Royal Show demonstrating a "fat probe" which undoubtedly had a proper name, and it worked by putting the end against a live animal or carcass. It showed the depth of fat at that point. Three blokes decided to have a bit of fun, and at least according to this probe, the one who outwardly looked thinnest was carrying the most fat around his midriff. None of them were particularly thin.
