We've had quads before but never 5!

Used to get the odd quin when we ran the Cambridge x Texels. Always went to the cull mart the following week.
Some might get all uppity about the idea of culling in-lamb ewes, but far better for ewe/lamb welfare than carrying to term IME. Quads are little worse than trips though, imo.

Yea theyre really more hassle than anything, you would wonder where they put them, had a ewe with quads last year, the 4 lambs you would swear were singles, couldnt believe how big they were!

Scanned main bunch of ewes today,
30 empties (will be scanned again with some later ewes hopefully most in lamb)
190 singles
714 twins
50 trips
5 quads :banghead:
1 quin :dead:
991 ewes scan 1.8 happy enough apart from the ewe with 5 in her!

I expect everyone will have a laugh or wince at your expense about the Quinn and Quads but what a terrific twinning rate. 72% twins is a great result and you should be very pleased. Highest we've managed is 67% but then we do generally scan higher and therefore have more triplets (and problems). Oh and don't worry about the Quin - she'll find a way of dying before she lambs ;)

What breed and are you a closed flock?

Haha, thanks yea very happy in general, they always scan a lot of twins, they are a mixture of mule/greyface and belclare /suffolk cheviot ewes, hopefully closed from now on, didnt buy in anything only rams this year, father had a lot more sheep a few years back and we used to buy in a couple hundred draft cheviot and horned ewes to cross with suffolk, border leicester and belclare rams, so majority are bred that way apart from 5 jacobs that have been here a lifetime! Plan is to keep breeding from within the flock with belclare and north country cheviot rams which were crossed with suffolk belclare ewes this year, sounds complicated but will hopefully simplify the system from now on :)

We have scanned first batch today,
70 mule and mule/ New Zealand texel 206%

180 continental ewes being virtually pure texel or cross beltex commercial ewes 175%. These would not be our choice of ewe but were taken over from previous owner when we rented his grass as part of the deal.

The 70 at 206% are from our own flock.

Overall we are happy with this.

scanned first 400 today 196% pleased but one lot had high number of empties and lambing is far from tight not quite sure what to make of the high number of second cycle ewes, (more than 100) more teasers required I feel

Scanned the pedigree ewes and the Beltex x hoggs that will be sold in may with lambs at foot. Pures did 164% but had too many geld for some reason. 177% without the gelds so the ones in lamb have done well for pure Beltex/Texel. Can't put the gelds down to one tup or old ewes either which is frustrating.
The Beltex hoggs scanner too well probably. 136% with only 5 geld out of 121. Too many twins in them and even a triplet!
