Schmallenberg?

Mid Carmarthenshire here and mid January one of the vets said she had seen one Schmallenberg calving and plenty of lambs. Her view was it was about as she was seeing too many cases with classic deformities to put down to anything else. Obviously not feeding the info back to APHA though. :scratchhead:

There seems to be plenty anecdotal evidence about, but that is all :(

Local vet's newsletter said they had confirmed a number of cases. Anectdotal evidence would suggest the same I'm afraid.

There are confirmed antibody positive blood tests in several herds in NE England (Durham and Northumberland) that haven't started calving yet; including us. We tested because we had fertility problems in a bulling group. Not looking forward to calving. The positives are spread around the region. Either we were unlucky or there's a lot about. I'm told that field immunity after infection only lasts 6 to 9 months. I've ordered sufficient vaccine to do the cattle after calving, but there won't be any available (manufactured) unless there is sufficient demand. If anyone wants to get vaccine you need to order some from your vet and hope that enough people put an order in for the manufacturers to bother to make some.

There are a fair few lambs and calves around now. Has anybody seen any signs of Schmallenburg? I understand there is some funding available for testing possible cases but I will need to investigate.

Would be interesting to see if we could build a picture of where cases have been seen.

This is the problem, only 55 cases confirmed countrywide. Need to encourage anyone with suspicious cases to contact their vet and get some sample off for testing (that should be free now). We won't get anywhere making a presumptive diagnosis if we want a vaccine back etc.

We have 2 positives in the practice so far.

I don't see any great value in blood testing for antibody, what does it tell us?

These two are PCR testing (looking for the virus itself) in the brains of deformed lambs.

It will be late spring before calves are born from the susceptible window.

Agree, but Blue Tongue could be mistaken Schmallenburg.
