Schmallenberg?

It will be late spring before calves are born from the susceptible window

I was told that the susceptible window was 40 days to 120 days after conception. Midges are around July (possibly June ?) to October. So, say being born 1st January, that puts 40 to 120 days finishing around the end July with a month of midges at the end of the window. 1st Feb around the end of August. 1st March around the end of September. Why will it not be until late Spring before susceptible calves are born ? Have I got this completely mixed up ?

most of ours that had problems were between christmas and new year , early ones ok and nothing since early jan (few bandy lambs ) so it hit here end july early august , the sh rams / ewes we had for sale also developed a scour and lost some weight about the same time , we put down to fluke not thinking about schmallenberg . all sold ones seem to have got ewes in lamb ok , when used from end august on .

There is a wider window in cattle, but I as assuming the exposure was the same time as the deformed lambs born just now

Thanks for the link. I rung our vets and they found out that it there is free testing but I would have to take it to Langford which is an hour each way for me and then would still be charged £20 disposal fee. But the guy at Langford said by the sounds of it it is more than likely to be SBV. I'll be taking it up the kennels

Makes me mad. You were willing to get it sampled, we need samples to see what was going on and yet they fob you off. Your vet could have collected the samples and sent them off, no need to go miles away.

I would even have been fine paying the extra over what our kennels charge for disposal of it had been collected but not spending an afternoon when don't have an afternoon spare isn't going to happen.
I assumed the sample had to be taken at he animal health lab. I'll suggest to our vets they take the sample if we have another.
Animal health weren't even aware of he free testing when I rang them. Bit of a joke really.

Frind had a suspected case yesterday, vet just took the lambs head, will let you know the result. Not good news, herd of a few early lambers having a bad time with it not too far away.

The scheme in the UK (that is free with certain conditions) will only accept brain.

I do sometimes forget to look at individual posters country, so what they do elsewhere is up to them. As the virus has a preference for nervous tissue, the placenta is an 'interesting' choice of site.

I hope everyone who is concerned about this year and next year is hammering away at their vets to get some vaccine ordered.

I have yet to be compnvinced, and I'm generally pro-vaccination against such things. If SBV has been through, whether at a stage of pregnancy that has caused malformations or not, will the sheep/cattle not have developed some antibodies to it from that exposure, rendering vaccination pointless?:scratchhead:
Is there not a suggestion that immunity has only now waned since the last round of infections, three years ago?

Yes. This is how some of the similar viruses behave. There is still a lot we don't know about SBV. The only way we will get vaccine back is if we have a lot of evidence there is a need (lots of confirmed disease) and lots of farmers signing up to vaccinate year on year.

Most of the vaccine went in the bin and cost the drug companies millions. You can understand why they would be cautious bringing a vaccine back (and making such an emergency vaccine in future)

lamb both back legs rigid and pulled up tight to its body, to her credit she lambed it herself though,as the second one of a twin.....
outside lamber to,

i'm going to assume schmallenberg,as its been reported in earlier and later flocks this time locally, if it is it will be pretty much our first one as far as far i know........
bloods tested in 2015 showed nothing in ewe lambs.
