Seed availability

Being told that wheat and barley seed is short? Is that right or just talk to get orders?

Extase is pretty well sold out on pre harvest orders. Impresario Cl osr is in demand too. Otherwise I’ve not heard of any shortages in the various mailings I get from the suppliers who obviously would prefer all orders placed so they can plan their logistics.

My variety choices were finalised months ago when the cropping areas were also sorted. I don’t choose on the basis of the recent harvest results.

That’s not much of a saving. Why is your FSS is so dear?? My spring barley is £252/t all in vs £425/t bought in as C2

Always have Austral plus and manganese on wheat as wheat follows beet or potatoes. Start from full spec wheat as well, so that was at least £180pt last year. Then the bag and royalties to pay. And for the mobile grain cleaner cost etc. Also the tail wheat that gets taken out (a lot last year due to OBM) there ain’t a lot in it imo.

Save your bags & mix the tailings back in the bulk.
I agree the saving is not huge but every little helps.

Seed crops in East Anglia are fine, we did have some concerns in the rest of the country but although we don't have all the results in from those areas I think the majority of England will produce enough winter wheat and barley seed.

As for the Borders and further North I will reserve judgement, still a fair amount to combine.

Obviously certain varieties will be short on a local and occasionally national basis. A few of the Hybrid barley varieties have sold out, due to lower seed yields, reduced back up crops from abroad and some stock issues.

Winter beans may be one crop that does get tight judging by early sales.
