Considering red clover in my italian silage mixtures, this ground is not grazed. What seed rate are people using? . I tend to go high with the italian about 17kg/ac

Personally I would go Red Clover Hybrid Ryegrass ,it seems to compliment Red Clover , grazes better, 3 kg Red 10 Ryegrass
Would consider Hybrid, no grazing on any of these fields though. Do tend to dry up so max yeild off the first 2 cuts has worked well in the past. Subsequent cuts feed young stock so there is a little more flexibility. Recent weather conditions may favour the hybrid.

And on your dry/wet ground I expect your stream still isn’t runnin

but reckon its had a good cleanout, flood water has done that, cheaper than a digger.

it was flooding fields making it about 30 metres wide, in the flash flooding last may, to completely dry in the summer.

and at present, we have no dry ground, and l preferred last feb to this, struggling to get any shite out, and lagoon is full.

but the local saying, is febuary fill dyke, well its bloody well full now'
it wasn't last year, and had a serious dry spell.

If you want max yield early on then job to beat Italian and agree with the higher seed rate especially if its a Tetraploid
Some of the Festuloliums cope better with drought but won't be as early and cost a lot more

how much ?
Will work it out ,

I’ve maxed out the productive late ryegrass and Festulolium to the mx permitted 70%

Using minimal amounts of more traditional grasses to qualify for the 5 grasses rule.

I’ve increased the white and red clover part of the legumes

Also maxed out the more productive herbs in Plantain & Chicory.

Hybrid work very well BUT remember they can be short lived especially under intense cutting regimes.

What seed mix are you going to use and are you going to just over seed this into your existing leys
I've a friend who sells seed, so will sit down and sink a few beers and make a mix. But plantain from experience is what suits us and this farm, so will be heavily centred around that.
Yes will be direct drilled into all existing lays
