@Old Tip ,haven't you just had some done?
YeH just had fifty done, we used the Welsh Organic Tannerythis time, bit dearer at £55 each but had a pallet load stolen (rejected) by the other firm so not using them again. There’s good info on the WOT website in how to prepare them before sending them to get tanned, our slaughter house is binning them all at present, so very happy when we pick them up as it saves them money.

Butchers down the town selling big ones for 50£, is that cheap or dear.
must be imported or he’s selling them at a loss

If you find someone let us know, the one we used to send them too has packed up, it’s not a cheap job but they are magnificen, the ones you get in the shops tend to be off calves
I got the hide of a nicely marked Hereford bullock tanned. Pussy Bell who is our local knackery chap accumulates a pallet of hides , and they were sent to Italy to be done. I think it cost me £180 ish . This was 3 yrs ago , and the hide is great 👍

DIY - to be truly sustainable you do need plenty of dog turd and wood ash.
and stale urine.

We get our sheep done at Eastern Leather, about £35 ish. We sell them for a bit more than that, coloured is more too. Cow hides tanned in Italy as above but an awkward job to get yours back as they send the green skins by the pallet.

I guess that tanning is another of those unpleasant industries that have been sent abroad like steel and manufacturing.
