I made a mistake one day and let a shetland tup past me and the barsteward dived into the trailer - decks were down so I crawled in to get him - that was the second mistake I made that day:banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead:

Shearing time he was in every field on the farm and eventually my son tackled him on the neighbours ground - wife got a call to bring a pick up and a pile of twine - it was apparently not easy to make son out on the call since he was fighting off a collie who was trying to get even with the tup:devil:

Just about to put the tups out this year when the neighbour called - " any chance you could catch your Shetland from among our ewes?" - So we tag teamed the tosser - one collie in to take the steam out of him and once the dog got tired the second collie was released..................

Took the tups out of the ewes on Dec 10th - guess where our boy is on Dec 12th?:spitoutdummy:

his name is Satan

Wife has 100 scotch pie cases on order

Can’t see it dying just yet living with llamados and looking after her for all these years I see on Facebook she has some at a grand old age

You need to take a step back Spin Maester.
Why do we keep sheep ? For some it is the wool. For others is the milk. In some parts of the World (Wales, Derby) it is for the 'companionship'. All valid reasons to keep a sheep. But for most of us, it is the taste.
Step forward the Portland. Nothing, bar nothing, beats the taste of Portland.
If only there was a ram lamb for sale somewhere...
Your lucky day, I reckon I can fit him in a Hermes box (y) .

I have only eaten Portland lamb once, but it was outstanding. Super sweet and tender

Really interesting thread . I picked up some Shetland store lambs a few weeks ago. Wormed them and put them out with the others . As soon as you go close to the sheep the shetlands peel off and run along the fence . They run so fast !
Never had anything to do with them before .

We have half a dozen breeds, the only one that makes it to our freezer is the Portland. Impossibly slow to build the numbers up, only ever have one lamb and 75% of them are male lol. Have used a Portland ram on half the Dorset ewes this year to see how much of the flavour comes through in the cross.

Shetlands are great sheep in many ways, but utterly horrendous in others.
I have about 50 pure Shetland ewes here, and have learned that dogs have to be used to them to cope with them.

They are designed for island living here in the Northern Isles as only the sea can properly contain them!
You need bullet proof fences, no gaps at all.

They are very smart, always thinking and looking for a way to outfox you. The ewes never seem to be scared of you, they just don’t want you to bother them.

I have only ever had 1 Shetland ram, for tupping Hoggs.
He flattened a (ropey) 6ft stone Dyke and escaped. He was then found in a neighbours garden 1 mile away.
He bent about 30m of brand new fencing right over after repeatedly bashing at the (5ft 6) stabs all night.
He tried to smash through a new wooden gate.
And when we finally put him in with some pure Shetland ewes one December, on an unfenced headland, he disappeared!!
So he either fell into the sea or else escaped along the coast somewhere else, never to be seen or heard of again 😯

But had he tupped them first, so that his genes were passed on.... for better or worse?
