Is there any other country that has such a shortage of workers, from a shortage of lorry drivers , to all the building trades, ie bricklayers plumbers carpenters electricians etc etc then theres a shortage of doctors nurses dentists, and i forgot vets, lots and lots more, if this is all true then what the hell are our young people doing because there should be no excuse for any young fit person not to be doing or training for a job, one last one theres a shortage of soldiers, forgot that one? comments please and please from others countries whats your labour market like?

What are most the young people doing? All going to uni and studying sociology or music and then working 15 hours a week in your local costa coffee and blaming the government and older generations for the fact they have no money.

The daft thing is most farmers with a little bit of training would be perfectly capable of doing any of those first trades you named, would earn more money and have the option of working less hours....................and quite a few would have a farm to rent out as well !

Youngsters today want to sit in a nice warm clean office and get a huge wage packet each week to go and get pee'd at the weekend.as mentioned above there is a massive shortage of people to do most jobs on building sites, operate plant ,drive lorries etc.crunch time is rapidly approaching

I can't be a lorry driver or carpenter because im fully employed as a vegetarian fundamentalist and those occupations conflict with my beliefs.

To be fair there are often threads on TFF where people are describing what their kids are doing in terms of vocation and I don't think ive spotted many folk encouraging their kids to be carpenters or truck drivers. Normally finance or broadcasting or something which requires prior connections and probably cash helps along with attending some private school. What hope for the regular people who dont have 20K per year to send them to Priory prep?
I would happily drive plant all day but im highly over qualified and only have the tickets to drive a mono laser printer not the 20 tonne plus excavator and multiple choice site safety certificate.

I’m 30 and at school we weren’t encouraged to go into a trade, we were encouraged to go to university and only the thicko’s will go and lay bricks.
Not many people have a decent work ethic or respect for there job today
It might have been going on a bit longer than that, a mates wife said to me a few years ago that a lot of the less intelligent lads she was in school with were now running their own businesses in trades like building and were perfectly capable and creative, as she went on to say, what happened to the clever kids? I wasn’t in the same school but the implication to know who they were but the implication was that they hadn’t done that well for themselves.

On a similar note, I know one of the farmers who’s just won a farmers weekly award, best mates with my cousin in school, he wasn’t academic, never went to uni and didn’t have a farm to take over, he was brought up on a council holding yet has been the most successful farmer I know of my generation, he has other businesses as well, and he ain’t finished yet.

Australia had a shortage of doctors, teachers, IT, farm workers, miners etc when I was last out there and got sponsored to stay on after my working holiday visa ran out. These professions got priority when applying for work visas. Ironic, when so many Antipodeans work over here!

The expectation seems to be to go to university and get a degree as it will help you get a better life. I know plenty of my old schoolmates who left at 16, learnt a trade and were earning salaries in their early twenties far bigger than a graduate with tens of thousands in student loan debts do in their thirties.

I was just about to type Australia but Brisel beat me to it.
I only know what people over there tell me and until recently the biggest gripe was everyone has gone to work in the mines and there's nobody left to do the other jobs. More recent conversations suggest it's not still the case as the mining boom has petered off a bit.

Spain employs a lot of migrant Africans on farms despite the very high unemployment rates, Saudi employs foreign labour to do menial tasks etc etc. Yes, there are a lot of places where they can't find locals to do the jobs.
I used to grow runner beans on a field scale and there was a shortage of bamboo canes from China because all the cutters had gone off to work in the factories

I have just turned 31 and was the exact same. I bumped into an old teacher of mine about a month ago, he was really dumfounded when I told him the education system had let me down. I am by no means a genius but all I wanted to do was work for myself and I have done since I finished my A levels (I was made stay on ) but none of my teachers understood that. I would say 95% of teachers have limited experience of the 'real world' they have been in the education system all their life bar perhaps a gap year or two.

Go to pretty much any country and they will tell you there's a shortage.
Its mostly bo**ocks in my opinion. There might be a shortage of good, insert trade here, and great is almost impossible to find but I don't there is a shortage.
There's not enough cheap labour for businesses that think the way to compete is to undercut the competition, so need minimum wage staff. But there is staff out there.
Trucking is an industry that complains there's no drivers but there's actually plenty. The big transport companies are always recruiting and many have a huge turnover rate. They get the staff but then they leave, sometimes because they cant do the job but often because of the way they are treated.
They have a retention problem not a shortage of drivers.
Ask a trucking company owner why their trucks are parked they wont tell you its because they have no work, they'll say "oh yeah that truck would be working if it had a driver".
