Would we need to tighten mains if we didn’t loosen them when we were taking the pistons?View attachment 1006549
Red ones are Big ends 8 in total to which the con rods are attached. And are nuts.
Blue are mains 6 in total which clamp the crankshaft to the cylinder block. And are Bolts.
As you can see the mains are bigger in size.
If I knew they'd been torqued correctly last time then no, If I didn't know who did them last time then yes.Would we need to tighten mains if we didn’t loosen them when we were taking the pistons?
Sounds nearly as bad as the IH Doncaster Wheatley Hall Road plant where complete wheels and tyres would disappear into the canal/river at the back of the plant and float over to the other bank for retrieval…Never short of parts books or maintenance manuals, he would just ring publication and have them sent to his office, he got me the piston tool and a valve seat cutter, but they were well used and being replaced by new ones and would have only ended in the scrap bin.
Only other useful items were crankshafts, and these were also destined for the scrap bin because the journals had been damaged, 10thou regrind cured that but of course you couldn't send new tractors out with them fitted, although a large amount of 3 cylinder engines went out with liners fitted, someone had bored the block wrongly on a night shift operation, reckoned they couldn't afford scrap all those blocks, they were sent out to a former employee who now worked for himself locally.
Almost eyerybody who worked in O block (Engines) who had a Ford or British Leyland car had a spare alternator 'borrowed' from the factory, all they had to do was drop one and damage the end case and it was declared scrap, then if you needed to fit it to your car just swap the old cover over.
I dont think it was a great sucess. I think the power train made it extremley sluggishnot my tractor but one of what may have been to come, it is a genuine picture of a tractor labelled the Z model
apparently under the drivers seat is a full power shift gearbox
not sure where the driver stored the ladder to get on

Where some of the tractors where parked was at the side of farmland, bloke used to come in to the local, 'anything you want let me know' toplinks, link arms and various pins were were easy prey for him, batteries and silencers were not fitted until they left the place. Never took him up on it, and he did get caught one night by the security guards, although empty handed.Sounds nearly as bad as the IH Doncaster Wheatley Hall Road plant where complete wheels and tyres would disappear into the canal/river at the back of the plant and float over to the other bank for retrieval…
Sorry Emyr

996 number 2 in for some engine work

This one thinks it's a Ford and has water in the oil. Also looks like it's been running on coal.
@Selectamatic you'll be glad to see I took the pipes off before the head this time..
Both pictures of the same tractor?Engine work turned into an engine swap.

Same tractor. 1976 pre Q cab 996 that had a replacement engine out of a very late 996 or early 1390 before I bought it less than 18 months ago. That engine had been bored and lined but started putting water in the oil and we found metal in the oil too. Pulled the engine apart and found big ends and mains scored, the thrust washers chewed and the crank ruined. Bought a replacement 1976 engine so back to original type oil filter. It'll get a remanufactured clutch too in the hope we never have to split it again. Both pictures of the same tractor?
How many engines has it had as I would think a spin on oil filter would be rare on a non Q cab model
Well it has a David Brown engine in it, does it qualify?
