on the theme of cost per bale, how much does it cost to cut/bale/fert/ wrap, an acre of grass, say a medium cut of 6 ton fresh weight, with everyone saying we have to do this multi cut, for top quality !!!! it has made us think that with heavy grazing, to graze x2 then a cut, at 'the right' stage, and back into the grazing rotation, and not to lay acres up for a big silage cut, probably not on the right stream, but it is sort of relavent

How many layers of wrap ? own machinery ( bought and paid for or financed ? ) or contractors ? How many bales an acre ?
Last summer, second cut after a dry spell, only got 4 bales/ acre, cost me £24 / bale.
Bales weigh 570kg.

bale and wrap £8
fertiliser , say 3 bags 27N @ £240/t is £36/acre
slurry - either contractor or yourself, cant quite cost that one
rent if applicable £100/acre
mowing £10r acre
rowing £5 acre

to get to a per bale basis , assume 8 bales per acre first cut , thus
bale wrap,8+
fertiliser=36/8=4.5
mowing= 10/8= 1.25
rowing 5/8= 0.625
rent- 100/8= 12.5

£26.90 before you cost slurry or moving the bales etc,

If you have to pay £100 rent for one cut then forget it it's no viable .we own our land so no rent but rental loss per crop I would estimate @£40

Adjusted to 100 per acre park. Assume 20 bales per acre while year is 5r. Reviewed costs above is 19.40 per bale assuming 20 bales which some dont get . Also slurry on top. I'd be surprise if 25 covers it

contractor, mow/row/bale and wrap
extra layer of wrap, chop baler, bales average bale weight close to 1 tonne, we will only be looking at small lots, at a young stage- as we miss out paddock gone to far ahead of dairy, contractors pit is £62, + mowing, its a head to head quality bales v good pit.

the rent would be spread over how many cuts you take, we are looking at baling high quality grass, as paddocks get ahead of the dairy, this cutting after a couple of grazings, will also freshen up the grass for the next grazing. its really an exercise to look at round bales v cost of clamp, which is £62 acre + mowing.
by having a larger grazing area, and cutting paddocks, we are hopeing to get a better grass utilisation, and this forum usually chucks up some good ideas

at chopped bales av weight close to 1 tonne, light cuts say 3or4 to acre at £ 25 bale, 2nd cut clamp at say 45 plus mowing, say £55 acre, but it would leave it longer for a bigger cut, probably cost effective to bale

Been offered 85 acres for 1 cut of hay/silage and then graze sheep till 31 Oct . It's quite close all meadow grass but good leys. Having sold all the sheep last Autumn I will either have to buy some or re-let it . What's it worth per acre ?... there is a chance I could then have it longer but it would be a change of owner

Yes can't put cattle on this year but hopefully I will keep hold of the ground ready for next year when I will want to put cattle there and if I can carry on from Oct then tack sheep will do for the winter.

How would the landlord feel about you re letting it.
